WASHINGTON The nation's airports are warning of chaos for passengers if the White House doesn't postpone the looming Real ID deadline.
The law requires airline passengers to present a Real ID-compliant driver's license or ID card at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints in airports as of Oct. 1. Those licenses require more proof of identification than regular licenses and are generally marked with a star on the top.
But while states have already issued 95 million Real IDs, that represents just 34 percent of the total, leaving two-thirds of the country with about seven months to get them if they hope to use a license to board a plane.
Without a Real ID, airline passengers will be required to present a passport, military ID or Global Entry card to pass through security, even for domestic flights.

(4,634 posts)I hadnt had a valid state ID or drivers license in over a decade, and lost both my Social Security card and expired walkers ID during a move several years ago. I was expecting a huge PITA and at least two return trips to the DMV. But, no! They accepted my original birth certificate, voter registration card, and a W2 from 2011 as identification. Walked out with a Real ID drivers license for an extra $10. They didnt even make me take the written driving test, even though I had not had a license in over 10 years. 😳
ETA: Forgot- actually left the DMV with a printed paper as my license, they mailed the card to my house about a week later. Also surprising and kind of scary: car dealerships let me test drive cars with that just that piece of paper as my drivers license.

mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)If one assumes that only 1 in 3 people who might fly have a Real ID, because they're actually randomly distributed between flyers and non-flyers ... come October 1, every 3rd passenger shows up at the airport w/o the proper ID to fly.
That would be a friggin shit show.
Even half of that ... 1/6 ... would cause MASSIVE headaches. And it wouldn't just be that day, it would go on for weeks, even months, as the issuing agencies get swamped all of a sudden.
And the impact could be greater because all it takes is one in the family who can't get on the plane due to their ID.

She tried to get her birth certificate and the county wouldn't give it to her because apparently her parents hadn't named her (first name) before they left the hospital. She is in her late 70s. They were told they needed a court order. Unsure what to do, they decided they would hire a lawyer. They went to the court where the judge said they needed to get my and my brothers birth certificate, their marriage license, a siblings birth certificate. It turns out her sisters birth certificate also has no first name. They still hope to get this worked out bit its ridiculous they have to do all this to fly. At worse case she wont be able to fly anymore.

Just like voter ID, this is going to cause a lot of poor and elderly people a lot of trouble. Many folks will go to the airport expecting to fly and be slapped with this issue without knowing.
I'm wondering if any of the state DMVs are instructed to ask customers if they want the Real ID vs a standard driver's license. Otherwise, most folks would not know about it.

This smacks of the FCC/ TV signals going digital years ago and all the informational commercials informing people they would need a digital box in addition to their antennas to keep getting over-the-air TV. (15,555 posts)I think for the most part, with laws like this one, Americans are fed up with the changes that are enacted being for bullshit purposes that are mostly political and that cost us money some can't afford.
Does anyone really believe that a star on a license is going to stop terror attacks? Our elections are being attacked by Russia but that's apparently too difficult to deal with so we'll just make our own citizens jump through hoops and shell out money.

(6,374 posts)I ask because in Colorado, the star just appeared the last time I renewed my drivers license.
According to this web page ( https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/dmv/real-id-and-colorado ) Colorado has been, mostly, compliant since 2012. (Exceptions being, of course, undocumented or temporarily legal immigrants)
I'm wondering how this is all playing out from state to state.

(12,029 posts)My driver's license is current. I just wanted to get a Real-ID compliant card for travel. I had to fulfill the whole shebang.
KY_EnviroGuy
(14,494 posts)for air travel or to enter federal restricted facilities, such as military bases and nuclear power plants.
At least in KY, one can option to get a standard driver's license or one with a Real ID stamp, depending on your needs.
However, just because in your case the state of Colorado is compliant, that says nothing about how many of its citizens have applied for and received Real ID.
This is why I think this is going to cause massive confusion this fall, as many will be refused access to air flights that have currently valid regular driver's licenses but didn't know they needed this troublesome update just to fly.
Here's a summary from the FAQ section on Kentucky's web site:
Here is a list of IDs that fly:
Any Kentucky Voluntary Travel ID drivers license, permit or ID
U.S. passport
U.S. passport card
DHS trusted traveler card (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents
Permanent resident card
Border crossing card
DHS-designated enhanced drivers license
Federally recognized, tribal-issued photo ID
HSPD-12 PIV card
Foreign government-issued passport
Canadian provincial drivers license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card
Transportation worker identification credential (TWIC®)
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential
It appears that veterans can use their military ID card for flying and federal facility access.

(6,374 posts)I renewed my license in 2018 and it came with the ID star on it. I didn't have to jump thru any additional loops to get it.
Best I can tell, Colorado residents received a star on their ID upon renewal, starting in 2012.
If you're from out of state, you'll have to bring in all the ID info... like I had to when I got mine the first time.
edit to add: I didn't even know that I had a star until all this talk bubbled to the surface. When I saw the star, I went on line to verify that the star I had was what everyone was talking about.
KY_EnviroGuy
(14,494 posts)compliance with Real ID for all driver's license applications and renewals since 2012, so everyone has had to bring the documents in even if they just need to drive a car. Is that correct?
From the link you provided, to add to the confusion:
No, but please note that all Colorado driver licenses and ID cards, except CO-RCSA credentials, have been REAL ID compliant since 2012. Having a REAL ID compliant credential will likely make traveling easier for you. Starting Oct. 1, 2020, your non-compliant credential cannot be used to board flights or enter certain federal facilities, including military bases, nuclear facilities and some federal offices.
It appears then that availability and compliance varies widely between states, adding to the confusion......

(12,029 posts)OMG what a hassle. Even a current driver's license plus valid passport or Global Entry card isn't enough for them. You need TWO different documents with your current address on them, plus your physical Social Security card or evidence you're collecting Social Security payments, or a W-2.
Birth certificates don't help if you're married with a different name. Then you also need to bring your marriage license.
This is harder than getting a damn passport.
The clerk was very sympathetic because lots of people are coming in with loads of documents but they have to keep coming back because there's always something else that's needed. She said she dreads the weeks leading up to October.
