State Assemblywoman Christy Smith is a 39-year resident of Santa Clarita. A leader from this district who has a proven record of fighting for this district, Smith was called "Passionate About Public Safety, Education," by the Signal SCV newspaper. In the state legislature, she works hard every day to advance common sense solutions to address the challenges facing the people and communities she represents.
In 2018, Smith's campaign raised over $2 million and ultimately triumphed in a hard-fought election, securing a decisive win in the race to represent the 38th Assembly District, a district that represents 58% of California's 25th Congressional District. Smith won by over 5,000 votes and flipped a seat blue that had been Republican-held since 1978.
As Assemblywoman, Smith has worked hard to get things done for local neighborhoods and make a real difference for the people of the 38th District.
A leader on public safety, Smith wrote the law to compensate victims of human trafficking so that they have a chance to rebuild their lives. As Chair of the State Assembly's Joint Legislative Committee on Emergency Management, she co-authored a law that ensures first responders have mental healthcare covered in their workers’ compensation policy.
Smith also serves on the State Assembly's Education Committee; the Jobs, Economic Development, and the Economy Committee; the Privacy and Consumer Protection Committee; as well as the Accountability and Administrative Review Committee.
A tireless fighter for the people she represents - always working to ensure the 38th District gets its fair share - in 2019, Smith was able to secure nearly $400,000 for the College of the Canyons to modernize its facilities; $700,000 for the Free Clinic of Simi Valley, which provides medical care to low income individuals; $5 million for a new childcare center at CSU Channel Islands; and $450,000 for the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center, which provides important services to elderly patients in the Santa Clarita Valley.
As a former school board member, Smith has been an outspoken advocate for our schools, and has fought for more resources for local classrooms. In her first year in office, she authored a law making it easier for college students to use ScholarShare savings accounts to pay for educational expenses like rent and textbooks. Smith also enacted groundbreaking rules protecting high school students from sexual harassment, and ensured that high schools post reporting procedures and harassment policies.
Smith authored and co-authored two landmark laws on charter school transparency, ensuring that charter schools operate with a greater level of accountability, and eliminating loopholes that allowed charter schools to operate without oversight of the school district that authorized them.
Prior to being sworn into the State Legislature, Smith served two terms as a Governing Board Member and as President of the highly successful Newhall School District. Prior to her time in elected office, while raising two daughters, Smith served as a PTA and site council member and also founded the Valencia Valley Technological Education Foundation. Before then, she started her career in public service as an analyst at the U.S. Department of Education. A graduate of Hart High School, Smith attended College of the Canyons and graduated with honors from UCLA with a B.A. in Political Science.
Smith currently represents California’s 38th Assembly District, which includes the communities of Santa Clarita, Simi Valley, Valencia, Saugus, Canyon Country, Stevenson Ranch, Newhall, Chatsworth, Porter Ranch, Granada Hills, and Agua Dulce. The Assemblywoman lives in Newhall, with her husband Phil, along with their two daughters, Chelsea and Chandler.
