... the worst part .. was the audience who egged him on, laughed at his jokes and applauded his appalling lack of human decency ...
... Does Mike Lee actually believe that his Utah colleague was using religion as a "crutch" to justify a vote against Trump? ...
Does McConnell believe that? Does McCarthy think that Pelosi actually doesn't pray at all? Or that Democrats want to "destroy" our country? Or that the leadership of the FBI is "top scum?" Or that the investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 election was "evil" and "corrupt?"
I can't believe that they do. And if they don't, then something far worse is at play here ...
That was the worst part of watching Trump on Thursday. That every single person in that room smiled and laughed and, uh, celebrated, as though what Trump was saying was even close to normal behavior. It wasn't. None of it.

(16,616 posts)It's one thing to see a nutjob ranting, say, on a street corner, or in the Oval Office but to an uncomfortable audience. But to see him speaking before an enthusiastic crowd, where his most demented comments are greeted with tremendous bursts of laughter and applause--it challenges our sense of reality.

(5,401 posts)Let Trump carry on saying this is a victory for him and the GOP and he is fully vindicated.
A victory based on a rigged trial is not a victory by any definition. And his impeachment still stands. There has been no vindication.
He should be called D.J. Trump (impeached) for ever more.
But Trump (impeached) sees the tacky process the Senate went through as resulting in a rubber stamp for what he plans to do in future.
He will ramp up his insanity, hopefully he will break some law or rule of human decency that is so blatantly over the top, that not even the most feral slug of a GOP member can say it's fine.
Waiting for the day Trump (impeached) goes over that cliff. Let it be soon.

(333 posts)His impeachment will be a stain on him until the day he dies. Right now they are trying to do what trump always does "Spin" for his base. Nancy knew this that's why her process was so methodical--she knows trump's psychology, she knows his DSM-V, that's why she waited so long, she played him and he knows it. Now the whole world knows. The whole world knows the senate trial was a sham. What else could it be, no witness, no documents, no evidence, trump and his admin refused to testify--THE WHOLE WORLD KNOWS..only his sycophants are backing him and even they know it was a sham!!! But his impeachment was legit, untouched by his corruption and propelled by highly qualified, highly competent lawyers and congressmen, trumps not used to that. That's why he's mad. That's why he won't stop talking about it, not the acquittal, the impeachment---thats the part he couldn't shake and he's pissed.

(36,067 posts)It's something that adds up to "winning."
Winning at all costs is their gateway to the christo-fascist corporate campus that purges messy democracy and a silly constitutional rights document. Barr's speeches are one clue. Putin's dark money is the other. The democratic skeleton will remain. But the new global fascist neonazi body politic is what they intend to have rule the rest of "us."
That rest of that body politic are Americans beyond the 19.5% who voted for 45 in 2016.
Tyranny will be televised.
Those 13 TV anchors who didn't stand up for their CNN cohorts at a so-called "privateinvitation" SOTU luncheon are yet another clue.
If we Democrats are better than they, and we are, then we have to be careful not to fall for ANY variation of these kinds of in-group/out-group bullshit manipulations -- from media, political leaders, other voters -- or we will see Democrats picked off one at a time, demoralizing the best party on the planet.
Just the way we're seeing insider/outsider TV being suckered into the same manipulation.
We can't get emo about their emo campaigning. Let our nominee handle that.

Its not Republicans or Democrats, but Christian witness."
"No matter the outcome of todays special election in Alabama for a coveted US Senate seat, there is already one loser: Christian faith. When it comes to either matters of life and death or personal commitments of the human heart, no one will believe a word we say, perhaps for a generation. (333 posts)That's why they do it. Did you see melania's face. The woman is scared sh*tless of this man. You notice how he refers to democrats.
He talks like we're not americans, like we're war enemies! My guess is that they are all part of some inner conspiracy to change our beloved form of government to something similar to that of russia or North Korea. They no longer want to be bound by the constitution unless they change it to totally favor conservatives. There have been small groups of militants in Alaska, Montana, Texas, Arizona, California, and anywhere along the southern boarder. Based on what I've seen so far, the blatant violation of law, ignoring or disregarding constitutional norms and governmental policy. Changing rules so they don't have to comply. Sending letters to judges telling them that trump can do whatever he wants as long as he is in office. That bullsh*t speech alan dershowitz gave in the senate sham trial! Yelling at the media as if the media is truly the enemy! Yeah, something's happening alright, a revolution. WE ARE WITNESSING THE BEGINNING OF A REVOLUTION AND IT COULD GET VIOLENT! A good question is....what are we going to do about it. What can we do. If we vote him out...he vows not to leave.

Oh, I know this seems hard to believe. I don't ask for belief. Just pay attention. The Republican party is long dead at this point. The rotting corpse of reality will soon sink in.
I say, good! Fuck them!
Good fucking riddance.

(6,044 posts)Rand Paul is a case in point. After Chief Justice Roberts rejected Paul's attempt to out the whistleblower, Paul read the whistleblower's name into the Congressional Record-knowing that he might be endangering that man's life and his family's safety. Paul is a functionary willing to endanger a citizen in order to curry favor with a "strongman" leader.
Arendt was vilified for her assessment but she was right.
Hillary Clinton knew it, Nancy Pelosi knows it. Ambassador Yavonovich knows it. (It is no accident that many of our profiles in courage are women). Adam Schiff knows it.
Authoritarianism is related to a hierarchal view of society, and men in groups are more likely than women to rank themselves by power, as occupying rungs on a ladder-a pecking order. But it does not have to be that way).
Trump, in his out of control behaviors is like the oozing pus emanating from an infected wound. He is not the source of the infection. (I know it is an ugly image). If it was not Trump it would be someone else. However Trump is more than qualified to play the role of the vicious authoritarian "strongman."

"I can't believe that they do. And if they don't, then something far worse is at play here. They are willing to suspend their principles and beliefs and acquiesce to Trump's wild claims solely because it is good for their own personal politics. That taking a stand against Trump's absolute smashing of presidential norms isn't worth the political pain it might cause them.
That was the worst part of watching Trump on Thursday. That every single person in that room smiled and laughed and, uh, celebrated, as though what Trump was saying was even close to normal behavior. It wasn't. None of it."
I do believe that they believe everything they say publicly. Sure, we've seen reports from Democratic senators who tell us that they believed Trump was guilty but that, blah blah blah, they wouldn't vote to convict.
Well, folks, they believe every word they are selling. The believe Pelosi doesn't pray. They believe Adam Schiff is a corrupt pencil-neck. They believe Romney used his religion as a crutch. They believe Democrats hate America and want to destroy it. They laughed and applauded because they believe him and support him. Why? I suppose it's probably important to understand why, partly as a means to confront it and partly to put it in some historical context. But in the end it doesn't really matter why, only that they are true believers. They will do or say anything to support their Dear Leader. And for those who attempt to leave the fold, there are always caveats. Romney didn't vote to convict on both counts, just one. Almost every Never Trumper is still a Republican and believes in the principles of a party that has brought us to where we are today.
Cult deprogramers and campaign strategists have all sorts of ideas on how to confront this danger. Remember, though, that all plots to remove a certain 20th century dictator failed. It took a war where millions died to end fascism in Europe - well, as least for 50 or so years. There have effectively been no attempts to overthrown any of the Kim family in North Korea, because the risks are simply too great. Institutions are being destroyed. The environment is being savaged. Our cultural history - Native Americans, African-Americans, immigrants, and more - is being eradicated. The are virtually no protections for employees. And the social safety net is well beyond frayed. I know we are not quite in the same situation as Germany in the 1930s and 1940s or North Korea since the 1950s. We still have the semblance, and maybe even the reality, of free(ish) and fair(ish) elections, and we may well regain the WH and the majority in the House and Senate. And maybe we can take steps to restore the damage. But there are still powerful politicians and wealthy businesspeople, and 60 million Americans, for whom Trump is indeed the chosen one, and somehow undoing the brainwashing they have undergone is, for me, a black hole. Talk about a Bizarro world. The Fox legal commentator tells the cult that trump was guilty as hell. It will have no effect. The reported internal guidance regarding the propaganda machine at fox will have no effect. Because these voices are outnumbered, outspent, and outgunned.
So, Chris Cillizza is right, and there is something far worse at play.
