"SNIP.....
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), a moderate who is friendly with the White House, asked his colleagues to consider censuring President Trump as it concludes the Senate impeachment trial, the Washington Post reports.
Manchin has prepared a censure resolution for fellow senators to consider in the coming days, which would be a less severe rebuke than removal from office for Trumps efforts in pressuring Ukraine to investigate his domestic political rival.

(23,926 posts)But a censure resolution won't only shame him, it might just send him spiraling over the edge.
I call that a win-win scenario.

(34,490 posts)If they do censure him, they will claim it erased the Impeachment.

This system really sucks sometimes, and obviously isnt working the way intended right now.

(70,516 posts)Just this Ukraine stuff alone should have been more than enough to remove him from office.
Trump used taxpayer money to extort a foreign leader to make up "dirt" on a fellow American
so as to rig an election.
But if you are going to censure Trump then bring on the witnesses, evidence, and the complete
Mueller report too.

(11,605 posts)Several Republican senators said what he did was wrong but not impeachable. Call their bluff and make them vote for censure. The advantage of censure is that it makes it a lot harder for Trump to claim he was exonerated and the whole thing was a partisan witch hunt, if people in his own party vote to censure him.

(29,565 posts)The traitorous Repukes should own what they did and have their votes tied around their necks like a dead chicken for the rest of their scurrilous loves. Don't give their obituaries any help with a "voted for censure" fig leaf.

(25,253 posts)but he still has the honor of being 'impeached'. You can't take that away from him. That stain will follow him and his legacy for all times.
Censure is a compromise between 'removal' and 'acquittal'.
It gives those Repug Senators a way to put their money where their mouth is - when they say Trump did break the law but it doesn't warrant removal from office. He can't say he was acquitted or exonerated. He's been censured or penalized for breaking the law. I kind of see it as one mark against him - and he better clean up his act or next time - it's removal.
Put up or shut up guys. Censure Trump!!!!!
He can't take a victory lap or spike the ball in the end zone.
He won't be able to gloat at the SOTU.

(108,980 posts)the highest in the country -- and he got elected as a centrist who supported the ACA. Even so, he's voted with progressives about 60% of the time.
A DU-style progressive would never have gotten elected in WVA, so we're lucky he ran. (He was a popular Governor.) His vote in the Senate puts us one more vote closer to deposing Mitch McConnell next time.

(11,936 posts)And last I checked, its still the state where Trump has the highest approval ratings out of all 50 of them.
Manchin does piss me off a lot but I do, on some level, understand why he is the way that he is. Even suggesting censure is a very risky move for him honestly. There are people there that would contemplate shooting him just for that and I'm not exaggerating.

(3,167 posts)Manchin was just re-elected in 2018. By the time he has to face the voters again (if he decides to run) all of this will be ancient history. He doesnt have to pander to Republicans to save his seat - hes safe till January 2025.

(11,605 posts)They don't look like the impeachment effort was a total failure, and it's harder for Trump to claim the whole thing was nothing more than a partisan witch hunt if senators from his own party vote to censure him. And it gives vulnerable Democratic senators like Manchin an out on voting for a removal that won't happen and a better chance of keeping their seats. Absent having 2/3 to remove, I think losing a few Dems on removal in exchange for a bipartisan vote to censure is a much better result for us.

(4,490 posts)But I think it's not good to suggest that before he's officially acquitted.

(19,993 posts)He's crude enough that he would probably go to his rallies and mock the "weak little censure thing" that doesn't mean anything and has no effect so he's TOTALLY EXONERATED!
Then call Putin and MBS.

(9,213 posts)Like are there actual consequences. It would definitely kill his hopes of reelection though because it hints of wrongdoing and is thr same thing as Clinton.
It's a decent compromise and I can't imagine the Repubes getting behind him as their candidate if he were censured.
