I wish our Hawai'i caucus still met in person. We start mail voting

This year.

Nothing will ever replace my memory of the caucus in 2008, walking into a room with the respected old guard seated, so early arrived. I was an Obama volunteer for my precinct. The campaign taught us organizing, resulting in a childcare team, a legal team, a snack team and others.

In the small valley elementary school cafeteria where usually 100 people would meet, more than 5000 people gathered to persuade and make their choice. 5000.

We start voting in the primary by mail this year. No coolers with campaign bumper stickers, no long evening of community seeing the kupuna (elders) share their wisdom, some always for the last time.

I hope it’s an improvement but a lot that makes us a community is lost.

Somehow we will still have district leadership elections in person.

Good luck, Iowa. Our thoughts are with you all.
