Sorry, I liked the old days when the music was manufactured on the spot by the musicians.
God, I date myself.

(15,333 posts)Last one I think that was not taped was The Who.
They got killed for the sound, but folks that heard it live at the stadium said it was fantastic

(65,061 posts)And, Bruno Mars actually sang. I can't say whether Bruno's band was augmented but, he definitely sang every note.
Prince's band was 100% live, and the audio was quite good.
I'll admit, however, that that style of pop isn't my cup of tea. So, I might be jaundiced and ready to finds flaws.

Of course I'm multitasking with posting on DU because most of the music so far as kinda sucked.

(42,334 posts)especially given this is on FOX. But, JLo pole dancing? These are two very talented performers who spent most of the show higlighting their bodies. I noticed the man singing was in sweats. I hate that double standard.

I'm 60ish, and my main problem with JLo is that she is freaking 50 years old. 50!! I'm not a whole older than her, but damn her!!
I liked the show. Didn't love it.
Plus I'll never believe that anyone has, or will have, done better than Bruno Mars. Love his music and his dancing.

(24,504 posts)Seriously, listen to both bands in the mid 70's. They both had a 10 year history of playing together and the time's encouraged both bands to push their boundries. I think both Bands did that in the 70's.

(41,984 posts)JLo is fifty and Shakira in her forties and they absolutely rocked it. And it was very female empowerment. I have little interest in the Super Bowl in general but I like seeing what they do at halftime and the ads. I havent thought a lot of the ads so far (Bill Murray still to come and it is fantastic) but those women are amazing.
For the record I liked Prince best too.

(41,984 posts)If you havent seen Columbias Carnival you wont understand many of the dance moves, or Shakiras ululating, which some thought was a sexual move. It wasnt.
Wearing the PR flag while singing Born in the USA was a pointed message. Cirque du Soleil has poles and tight, spangly costumes.
I mean, sex sells is the oldest sell in the world and I dont object to it, but in that setting I dont think it was inappropriate what they did. It was exciting and having a Puerto Rican and a Lebanese Colombian woman doing it was a statement and a half.

(20,196 posts)They want it to be perfect and the only way you can get perfect is prerecorded.
sweetloukillbot
(11,028 posts)All Super Bowl halftime shows are mostly lip synced. exception was Springsteen. The producers want it to be perfect, so everyone is miming. The singers sometimes are singing live, but to a tape, just in case a mic cuts out they can keep everything going.
winstars
(4,220 posts)Some may not have liked what or how they played but all the vocals and music were live.
At the Super Bowl they tape the rehearsals in case of a huge audio issue, they will go straight to the tape because its like the BIGGEST TEEVEE SHOW EVER!!!
The acts you see who lip sync or who sing to a recorded music track are the same ones that always lip sync or sing to a recorded music track in any of their normal live shows, just more of the usual...

(4,250 posts)we need to remind people that the song "Born in the USA" is not about being all flag waving etc. I'm sure I'm not alone in wishing people would actually know the lyrics to a song and what the artist was saying before they appropriate these things. The next thing you know somebody will be dancing around in their negligee (yes I really did spell that without looking it up) at an animal rights protest while "White Rabbit" is playing because they assume it's a celebration of cute bunny rabbits. Just to show everybody I'm not completely pessimistic I know that many do not know of the song I'm speaking about so I will sign off by giving you a hint for when you run to the search engine of your choice. (42,564 posts)I don't know why some people have the idea that the Super Bowl is supposed to be family friendly entertainment. Don't most of the teams have scantily clad 'cheerleaders' that do very similar dance moves at all of the other games?
If women dressed and dancing sexily is a problem, maybe start with the ones doing it every week?

(11,001 posts)If the NFL hires two Latina Divas that people like for hip shaking and another who is always noted for her butt and body measures, they knew they were not going to get Mary Had a Little Lamb. NFL will take the customary criticism for a few weeks and move on to the next issue. Remember when everyone had a fit because Janet's breast was exposed. This performance puts that in 10th place. So, bottom line is that maybe before performance a warning should be issued and it is a good time to get some popcorn or have a halftime playground set up for children some place away from the main show, JUST COLLECTING MY THOUGHTS. By the way, they can also sing.

(13,041 posts)Shakira was quite entertaining. She is clearly very talented and has awesome dance skills. In her 40s & still able to do slinky moves like that - it goes without saying no Latino dancing is without alot of hip movement but she takes it to a whole new level. JLo on the other hand is too old to be doing what she did - the faux crotch grabbing (she did that multiple times on skimpy clothing that to me were wierd and didn't look good on her), too many shots of her crotch, rump and excessive thighs. Shakira's dancing was sensual but tasteful. JLo's was just dirty. She is a stunningly beautiful woman but there's gotta be some limit to the oversexualization. It was not a family event. I did like it that she had kids on the program but goodness, throw some clothes on around the kids. What's she trying to teach these kids?
That said, i have to say the Latin/global music & dancing were AMAZING! 2 high profile Latina women gyrating & singing at the top of their lungs. That in itself was a statement of the NFL's support of diversity, and rejection of the nationalist, anti-femininity nonsense. The birdcase, flags, and about half the lyrics sung in Spanish all were were subtle digs to this horrid administration.
The ladies sure brought their game. The internet was crazy feverish with the half time show more than the Chiefs' win LOL.
