Colorado Governor Ralph Carr

Opposed Japanese America internment and welcomed Japanese Americans to Colorado.

His stand caused him to lose his Senate race to a pro-internment Dem, Edwin Johnson. Johnson had proposed using the National Guard to keep Japanese out of the state.

The GOP refused to re-nominate him in 1942 because of his views.

A bust of him stands in Sakura Square, the heart of Denver’s Japanese community and has even been honored by Emperor Akihito.
