...but something weird happened when I went to install it on Roku (I wasn't going to follow thru, just wanted to see if it was truly available). It asked me to put in a code for a "private channel" (the code was displayed on the screen - I just had to input it into the field provided).

Never saw that on Roku before, and I've had Rokus for 9 years (since Roku 1). To test if it was a new feature, I installed the NBC News app and no such prompt occurred - it just installed the channel.

Although I wish it had been decided based on Fox content and not the end of a contract (which is what I read), I will now happily go full Roku.
