So what were the consequences?

So, fingers crossed, many of the Republicans will lose re-election in November. I'm actually fairly optimistic about this based on this completely simple and true premise:

1. Trump has pissed off and/or lost the faith of a significant percentage of the people that voted for him last time. Let's say 33%.
2. He hasn't won over anyone new since 2016. No one that DIDN'T already vote for him in 2016 is currently open to voting for him.

I haven't met one person that didn't vote for him in 2016 but now says, "Wow, he's really proven himself!" Cautiously optimistic, but never apathetic or thinking we have it in the bag.

That being said, besides possibly being voted out in November, have any of these people faced any consequences? A few people have gone to jail, yeah, that's nice. But have any of our ELECTED representatives faced consequences?

Besides shame, which is obviously monumentally important to these people. I am sure they are so absolutely distraught with guilt as they get driven around on their yacht (that they passed tax breaks for) that they can barely even plan their next round of insider trading and selling our country to the highest bidder.

If my kid asks me in five years, "What did the Democrats actually ACCOMPLISH to hold Trump and his cronies ACCOUNTABLE?"......what should I tell them?

Polls show that he's barely lost any support at all. His approval ratings are historically stable. That being said, his approval in some key states has dropped somewhat, but nowhere near 33%. His support among GOP voters has barely moved since 2016 and is very high.

Turnout is going to be key in 2020, just as it was in 2018. We have to assume he's going to perform similarly to 2016 and act accordingly. That means do everything possible to get out the vote and support electing Democrats at all levels of government.

"If my kid asks me in five years, "What did the Democrats actually ACCOMPLISH to hold Trump and his cronies ACCOUNTABLE?"......what should I tell them? "

You should your kid the truth - that the GOP controls the Senate and acted in their own interests. Democrats have done as much as they could with what they have to work with and will continue to do so through the election.

But there are a shitload of motivated voters. Based upon 2018 and Special Elections it appears that about 8 to 10 points are shaved from his 2016 numbers by district. Most of those are motivated voters who didn't get out in 2016. Now it appears that States/Districts hit by his tax increase were the majority of flipped seats. But the changes were also evident in Alabama and Louisiana. So if he loses 2 to 3 points per district in Michigan, PA, and WI, he is screwed.

Twilight, I understand what you are saying about my percentage estimate and admit it's entirely anecdotal. I work on the ground in a red area of central Florida. I encounter a diverse group of people everyday, but mostly poor to middle class Conservatives. Judging from how they talked about him after he took office, and now...... a significant portion are either disgusted or completely disheartened. Not 5%, not 10%. Maybe that's just my specific area, but I notice it in my FB friends and relatives, as well.

As for the overall point, I promise I am not trying to crap on the Party.......but at a certain point, one has to wonder if the fecklessness of our elected officials is a feature rather than a bug, so to speak. After all, many of the same organizations and corporations that lobby Republican representatives ALSO give money to Democratic representatives. I am not saying they are AS bought and paid for as Republicans, but something is clearly deeply wrong with our Party leaders if we are so friggin impotent even though we have a vast majority of the nation's approval behind us. Especially when compared to how successful Republicans were at steering the agenda or outright getting what they wanted when they were the minority and Obama's approval numbers were high.

It's not just enough to ask why does the NATION hold Democrats to a higher and more consistent standard, we also have to ask why are our elected officials so bad at defending us?
