Real ID compliance may leave up to 85,000 stranded the first day; senators aren't having it

The Real ID Act deadline is fast approaching, and Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich., is not convinced Americans are ready.

On Jan. 24, Peters co-authored a letter to the Department of Homeland Security to raise concerns about travel interruptions that could arise if travelers fail to present Real ID Act-compliant identification after the Oct. 1 deadline, according to a news release.

The Real ID Act requires all travelers over age 18 to present Real ID-compliant identification to fly.

The main concern of Peters and his colleagues stems from their belief that travelers are not well informed regarding the Real ID deadline, and that DHS does not plan on extending it.

I’ve shown mine to a variety of people and some say yes and some say no. I guess I’ll get to the DMV soon to find out for real.

I got tired of New Jersey screwing around, They keep sending me emails that I can go to my local DMV not when I contacted that DMV they said they are NOT ready.

when I had renewed my passport the year before that, I actually went on and paid the extra $$$ (since I was renewing the passport, it was $30 at the time) to also get a passport card - which is license size and would be acceptable for flying (or going into a federal building) without needing to actually carry that larger passport. The passport card doesn't have the full international effect of a regular passport but is accepted for certain western hemisphere travel.
