Washington, D.C. Speaker Nancy Pelosi released this statement after Senate Republicans voted against calling witnesses and compelling documents in the impeachment proceedings:
The Senate Republicans vote against calling witnesses and compelling documents in the impeachment proceedings makes them accomplices to the Presidents cover-up.
The President was impeached for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. He is impeached forever. There can be no acquittal without a trial. And there is no trial without witnesses, documents and evidence.
It is a sad day for America to see Senator McConnell require the Chief Justice of the United States to preside over a vote which rejected our nations judicial norms, precedents and institutions to uphold the Constitution and the rule of law.

(43,173 posts)should petition Roberts for bench warrants, sort of an old mainstay of common law, for witnesses, but I never saw that we actually did that. It would force Roberts to rule, but I guess they figured he could still be overruled by majority.

(15,540 posts)Every last one of us on DU must step up and do something to assure we have the biggest, bluest wave they've ever seen. Open up your wallets and give to Dem Senate candidates in states that we can flip. Phone bank, canvass, call, protest, put up signs, whatever you can do. Do not go quietly. Do not be afraid to speak out to anyone, I don't care who they are. They want us to be intimidated and afraid.
I'm seeing more and more people openly talk about this travesty of an administration and I think that's a good sign.

(22,482 posts)A lot of people do not understand how awful their actions were to the safety and democracy of our nation.
Raise money on their actions. Let people know what their actions meant - they were all part of the cover up of the president of the US in a situation that was injurious to our National Security.
No more is the GOP the party of the rule of law. They are the party of corruption.

I think Schiff was getting a little hoarse toward the end of the day, yet his message was powerful.

Fuck the GOP, in perpetuity. They have proven who they are, and they are attacking AMERICA (ALL OF US). The old GOP is dead, and the ones that remain and have any conviction at all, remain silent. Disgusting. You are part of the cult now. Happy landings.

They'll try again, though.

Mitch and Trump can bring this country to its knees in this way? Good luck voting them out! When one man (Mitch) has this much control over our system, IT IS DEAD!
What are we going to do?
Protest? Vote? They laugh at you! You think these people give a crap about a handful of people hanging around in the streets? Bullshit

(25,111 posts)therefore, Republicans can talk until they are blue in the face, no acquittal, no exoneration. It has verified that shithole is a criminal, he is guilty.
Across broad, even thru all the purging of voters, gerrymandering, foreign help, stealing and cheating, Democrats will win.
Yay!

(43,173 posts)She's got that exactly right. Incredible how much she followed and deeply understood the Constitutional framework these past 2 years. But that's what you get with a smart, experienced, career politician with a keen knowledge of political winds.
They should keep things humming. Hold hearings with Bolton, who I'm beginning to think the last red-blooded conservative (at least you know what's he thinks because he'll tell you). Impeach Barr, he's covering up for everybody. Oh, that's right, subpoenas are irrelevant now. Just hearings then. Is that what Clint Eastwood meant with that empty chair?

Many of our politicians are totally under the thumb of this class of people. This will not change until big money and corporate leverage is removed from global politics.
