It will be my final act toward this cretin who lost me a dear friend years ago over his candidacy. That man was an elderly, highly intelligent and beloved friend, but he'd been bamboozled by Gardner. One day when we were chatting (and I'd had much too little sleep) the subject came up and I ended up saying a few things re: Gardner that forever came between us. He died a few months later.

It never served to soothe my pain that I ended up being "right" about Gardner.
