Each House shall be the judge of the elections, returns and qualifications of its own members, and a majority of each shall constitute a quorum to do business; but a smaller number may adjourn from day to day, and may be authorized to compel the attendance of absent members, in such manner, and under such penalties as each House may provide.

Bold added. The Senate usually just assumes a quorum is present (wink, wink) for mundane, day-to-day stuff, but will do a quorum call for any real voting.

with a handful of senators when most senators are on holiday - however, if Dems all show up for a proforma session in force, they may have enough to get a quorum

wouldn't it be amazing if McConnell decided to push the final vote until next week, telling all the Senators to go home for the Super Bowl, and then Dems stay in town and hold the conviction vote while Republicans are away.

It allows Trump to be removed, and Republicans can scream that Dems betrayed them and tricked them into leaving, thereby making them free from consequences of voting against him or for him.
