Former national security adviser John Boltons new revelation about White House counsel Pat Cipollone being in on Trumps Ukraine conspiracy as early as May 2019 is dropping like a bomb on Washington. "This is the kind of bombshell that Mitch McConnell has been afraid of all along," reporter Kasie Hunt said on MSNBC.
Indeed, a day that seemed almost certainly headed toward a no-witness vote and fast acquittal just in time for Donald Trumps victory laps on Fox News and at next weeks State of the Union address now holds a slew of question marks. Hill reporters are now musing that the Senate trial could go into next week, maybe even mid-week, tweeted Politicos John Bresnahan. Trumps already in damage control, tweeting out fantasies like a drunken sailor on hallucinogens. Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski still hasnt announced her vote on witnesses, which is bad news for McConnell because she hasnt owed the GOP caucus anything since 2010, when she won reelection as a write-in candidate. Murkowskis now a no on witnesses.
As Americans, we should still be rooting for witnesses. The citizenry deserves to hear from Bolton in his own words, among others.
But as Democrats, we can also feast on the political peril this represents for Republicans, who have now admitted that Trump did everything House managers said he did and that they just dont care. As commentators on MSNBC absorbed the new Bolton bombshell, they almost unanimously declared it an electoral disaster in the making for Senate Republicans, especially given where public opinion has been on witnesses all along.
Even former Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill was bullish on the prospects for Democrats. If these Republicans shut this trial down and say, No more, she said, it is a great gift to the Democrats in November.
As Sen. Kamala Harris noted before the news dropped, "There can be no true exoneration if there's not been a fair trial. Period." Now more than ever, Senate Republicans are also on trial. At least some of them seem to know it.

(22,124 posts)now and forevermore (while increasing our lead in the House). The Gop, opening its doors to white supremacists, racists, extreme right wing radicals, thugs who trample on the rights of everyday Americans, etc. has deliberately lost its way in order to gain and retain power at any cost, but mostly to retain the 2017 Tax Cuts for its sole donors, the $billionaires and $millionaires, where money is everything to them (and who object to paying one thin dime for anything, let alone taxes or their fair share).
Time to push all of the right buttons and keep up the attacks on the republican thugs until election day, November 2020 (all while totally ignoring the presidential orange chimp in office).

(43,166 posts)and are content to let voters do the deed that they cannot or will not.
I will give them one point: MAGAt's will be a lot less pissed if voters reject Trump than if Republican Senators do.
And who can say severe health problems won't be manifest just a handful of months from now?
Impeachment is failing to summon patriots of the Revolutionary War caliber who can do impartial justice. But a simple majority in the House would have gotten 'er done.

(15,645 posts)Theres no question in my mind that the right wing propaganda machine, led by the orange anus, will cast doubt on the legitimacy of any Democratic Party victory. Whats to make one think their legion of mindless deplorables will not follow their lead once again. We are headed for a long period of tribal warfare. This isnt going to go away or die down easily regardless of how it plays out.

(33,345 posts)not Trump per se, like Sekulow and Guiliani do.
He should have acted to dissuade Narcissistic Sociopath from breaking the law and committing impeachable offenses.
Regardless, this article is pure speculation on the impact of these revelations (which everyone in the WH has known about for a month).

(7,403 posts)Right now the only hope remaining is extremely low and that would be for CJ Roberts to call witnesses and I seriously doubt that even this will move his needle. Next up, Trump's free half-time interview by Hannity at the Super Bowl. Time to boycott the entire half-time show -- just take a very long potty break with the TV turned off.

(8,699 posts)No matter the scandal or crimes its completely irrelevant.
Trump is completely immune.
Bolton could literally come up with video of trump eating babies and 10 witnesses and it would not matter.
The house literally cannot investigate anything. Trump can just ignore the subpoenas with zero consequence.
Never have to appear or answer to anybody about anything.
Yes there is the courts but that is literally years, if ever to resolve. The USSC may never touch it given the conservative majority.
