That's what he said, today. Oh, and: "We think we have it very well under control. We have very little problem in this country at this moment five. Those people are all recuperating successfully."
I can't even begin to get around all of the squirrelishness of those statements. Not the least of which is, how would one unsuccessfully recuperate?

(82,849 posts)There was a very influential person who tweeted that allowing ebola to get into the United States called for the resignation of President Obama. We haven't heard a word from that person about allowing the corona virus into the U.S. But you know that Donald Trump never subjects himself to the standards he demands of others.

The guy in Houston or New Orleans threw up outside. There are dogs. Dogs will eat that. Dogs will spread Ebola. Obama is not doing anything about it. WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!

(31,261 posts)Ebola is more than 22 times deadlier. Although Trump was a jackass to say what he said then.

(31,261 posts)is more that two times lower than the two influenza strains that are currently hitting the country. It has the lowest death rate of any irregular virus outbreak in the last 50 years.
I have no love for Trump, but so far, I have to agree with him on this one. And I think that we would be fools to make a big issue over what he is saying in this case (because once it all ends, he will get to say I was right and the democrats that attacked me were wrong, then he will project that into EVERYTHING).

(16,199 posts)For instance Connecticut has recorded thousands (likely in 10's) of flu infections this year and just 23 deaths and 1,036 hospitalizations. Of the 4,864 cases that were tested to identify the strain in Connecticut, 52% were the type B strain. The coronavirus is killing at 4 times the rate.

(31,261 posts)In China, where all the Wuhan Coronavirus deaths have taken place so far, the death rate is below 2%, over 8,000 cases reported, 170 people have died.

(16,199 posts)15 million cases of flu. 8200 deaths.
At a 5.5% rate, that would be 825,000 dead.

(31,261 posts)serious previously unknown virus in the last 50 years, lagging well behind SARS, which had been the lowest. The MERS virus was the most rare, but also the deadliest, with 80% of the people that contacted it dying. SARS was 8% dying, Wuhan Coronavirus is at below 2% currently, with the mortality rate having dropped in the last 48 hours.
I stand by my basic premise, if we make a big deal of the Wuhan virus, Trump could most likely be handed a public relations victory curtesy of us. The virus currently has not reached the level of death rate that the least deadliest virus before it reached, although the number of reported cases have been higher. That is not to say that the virus won't morph into something really deadly, though that seems unlikely now that at least one lab has replicated it.

(16,199 posts)My concern with a virus like this is that it would break our health system because of the high numbers of people needing care for breathing problems if it went epidemic. Just like the flu, younger people without major health issues would fight it off quite successfully.

(31,261 posts)way it's cut. If it overruns the country and gets fixed without a lot of people dying, he claims victory. If it has no impact here, which is looking more likely, he claims victory. If we run around with our hair on fire and the second result happens, he claims victory and can project against us in all manner of other issues. So we have to be careful in our reaction.

Wilbur Ross: Coronavirus will "help" bring jobs back to the U.S. from China
I do hope they're not so dehumanized from a lifetime of supergreed that they would cause something like this just to help "their" economy.

(31,261 posts)We are in a box, Trump is going to claim a victory regardless of what happens. If we overreact, then he gets to project that on everything, even our General Election nominee.
