WaPo on coronavirus: 'Here's what we know'

Coronavirus prompts CDC to expand travel warning to all of China; top U.S. health official urges Beijing to admit disease experts

● The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention raised its travel warning Monday to a level 3, its highest alert level, urging U.S. citizens to avoid all nonessential travel to China.

● With at least 106 dead so far, Beijing has broadened the extraordinary quarantine to more than 50 million people, but the mayor of Wuhan, the outbreak’s epicenter, said 5 million people have already left his city. (4474 cases confirmed world wide)

● China’s health minister said the coronavirus is increasing in virulence and now could be contagious even before people exhibit symptoms, making apparently healthy people possible carriers.

● A scientific assessment of the spread of the disease, assuming an optimistic 90 percent quarantine, still predicted more than 59,000 infections and 1,500 deaths — twice the toll of the 2002-2003 SARS outbreak.

● The CDC said on Monday there were no new confirmed cases of coronavirus overnight but that it is investigating 110 people in 26 states.

● In the United States, health officials confirmed five cases of the pneumonia-like illness, while infections also have been confirmed in France, South Korea, Japan, Nepal, Thailand, Cambodia, Singapore, Vietnam, Taiwan, Canada, Sri Lanka and Germany.

I would think that there is something that the Chinese government should do to minimize this risk. Not only for their own people, but for the risk it presents to the rest of the world.

Farms and markets in China keep people and animals in close proximity. The same goes for swine flu / bird flu.

Almost makes me want to be a vegetarian. It just seems so unappealing and unsanitary.

This outbreak would be worse. I think that fact that over 100 people have died in just a few days shows how necessary it is to make a vaccine.

Almost 4500 cases now. 107 dead. 62 recovered.

The death rate cannot be accurately calculated currently due to the rate of increase in cases.

I'm not sure what the process is. Initially is was RNA testing. I don't know if they have an anti-body titer test yet that is readily available. The CDC said they were going to make kits for testing and make then available to speed up the process. Apparently resources in China are stretched thin.

to come up with the theory the virus was created in a lab somewhere in China as a biological weapon to use against the US, but it escaped from captivity.

Then Trump will tweet that as a fact, and remind us how really, really bigly bad China is.
