(9,128 posts)I could imagine the Republican senators from half a century ago voting to remove Orange Julius from office, either out of principle (A few of them) or to cut their losses (More likely). But todays Republican Party is a very different critter from what it was then. I doubt todays Republican senators have either the gumption or the principal, even the ones in safely-red states not facing voters until 2024.

(14,048 posts)Even with every witness and no matter what the testimony. Every single one of them - including Romney and Collins will find excuses. And they don't care how lame the excuses are because they are terrified of the Trump base.
Being a coward is not just a requirement for a Republican to hold public office, it's a feature.

(43,271 posts)that phone calls to his office were running 95% against Trump. You think it's a lot different in GOP Senator offices? They had NO IDEA they couldn't control the spin. Information now moves too fast for them to countenance. So I think they're reading polls.
This "Trial" now turns on Bolton and whatever can corroborate Bolton. Even if it's all the lies to cover it all up. We are two chess moves from "Checkmate!" But do those moves exist?

(11,358 posts)the votes to remove. people need to accept that the GOP is not going to allow this to happen. a Collins here and a Romney there .. doesn't make any difference. period.
not_the_one
(2,227 posts)(who they will promptly ignore) so they won't seem so obvious when they actually say, in effect, "so fucking what, there is not a damn thing that he could do that would make us impeach him. Nada. Zilch. NOTHING. We are "bought and paid for" whores of Vladimer Putin."
Then they can add to it, "We've already got the votes all lined up."
The pisser is that they will be talking about the rigging of the NOVEMBER EC vote, not the vote to NOT impeach. THAT vote is a given. For November we can take the "One person, One vote" farce and shove it up our collective asses.
It just takes 4 repub votes to hear the witnesses, but 67 total to remove. They will allow 66, maximum. Selected senators in swing districts who need to "appear" fair. They have received their marching orders.
Remember, the turd has now publicly stated that he could even lose the popular vote by 5,000,000, and still win the EC vote....
Unfortunately the American Public is now so ignorant or hate filled (FAUX news watchers), or jaded (bothsiderism), to rouse themselves up from their couches of 24/7 enter/infotainment, and actually DO SOMETHING about it.
We may have the votes, but they have the hackers, who very carefully made sure that although Hillary received almost 3,000,000 MORE votes than pootie's sock puppet, he managed to squeeze just enough votes in the perfectly selected three states, to get the 70,000 that gave him the EC. Yes, I adamantly believe they COULD AND DID just that. Putin didn't hack voter databases, or election systems, without purpose. To say he did, or that it wasn't possible, is nothing but "ostrich with head in sand" thinking.
I'm back to my pessimistic side of the pendulum swing...

Now, I don't need his testimony... I think Bolton is a stupid pile of shit. I am just saying that he is harder for the typical wingnut (who cheered when he was named NSA) to dismiss.

(11,358 posts)if you buy into the argument of the "server" or "Ukrainian interference" .. or any of the other transparently false narratives put forward for Trump's actions. But most people .. including the witnesses that have already come forward .. had absolutely no trouble in connecting the dots, to the motivation that was clearly revealed.
So .. if you didn't believe Mulvaney, or Sondland, or Vindman, or Taylor .. in what was so clearly evident to them ...
Unless Bolton has a tape of the president targeting Biden by name .. in connection to his 2020 run ...

(102,351 posts)if the few more "intelligent" (relative I know) among Senate leadership, along with Pence and perhaps a few others might conspire with those who could hurt Trump (e.g., Bolton, others) to time some well-timed leak of evidence behind the scenes.
While it is an interesting fantasy, I honestly don't think I could credit any of this crop of R's with being smart enough to pull it off (maybe Bolton, who I dislike intensely, but can't deny his Machiavellian traits and vengeance tendencies).

(43,271 posts)What's public at this point in time is all we know. Trump is very vulnerable to any additional information that comes out. Trump has power, but look at his friends if you can call them that. If someone or something holds, forgive me, a trump card on Trump, the time to show their hand is imminent. Real power is played when the hand meets the moment.
And GOP Senators know it's 9 months to Election Day. "You mean we can make this go away?"

(4,147 posts)and Trump has been underwater for a while, they have to start thinking about their own survival. Senators don't get to gerrymander their districts like House reps do. Plus they don't have any idea what else they would be covering up for that might come out. If they dump Trump now, they have a chance of nominating a new POTUS Candidate who can win in November.
The other option is to follow Trump like lemmings off a cliff.
I think that is what it will come down to

actually removing donnie would be far more damaging to the republican party than him resigning and claiming victory.

(2,201 posts)Right now, trump is actually the only President that could be the first in history to be removed.
Unfortunately, it's more likely that he becomes the first president in history to be acquitted.
There's not a single gop Senate member that will vote to remove trump, no matter what the evidence is.
They literally could have video tape of trump committing every single thing that he's accused of, and they still wouldn't vote to remove him.
