<snip>
The death toll from Storm Gloria in Spain rose to 11 people on Thursday as freak weather continues to batter the east of the country.
The Balearic Islands and eastern regions including Catalonia and Valencia have borne the brunt of the storm now entering its fifth day.
Winds of more than 140 km per hour, waves reaching more than 10 metres and heavy snow and rainfall have unleashed chaos, crippling transport and destroying infrastructure.
Meanwhile heading for Europe

(54,409 posts)No, not really. Just: the guys in Paris said it was urgent and the guys in Spain said it wasnt. I never know where Im going to be in two days time usually. But this time, Ive been in the States for a month, and theres a backlog of stuff I have to do when I get back. Of course everybody thinks they need to be first, and geography has a say in the matter, too.

(54,409 posts)In December, due to the strikes, I had to walk from the Gare du Nord down to my office in Paris (half hour there, 45 minutes back, since it was uphill on the way back). I'm used to roughing it. And since a plane can't land in the middle of a hurricane, I'll trust Iberia to cancel on me before flying into a fatal situation.
This is all for work, remember, so the fun part is relative. But I am used to Paris after 40 years of nearly weekly visits, lived in Barcelona as a teenager, speak both French and Catalan, so it's all familiar territory for me.
