Trump's new visa rules target pregnant women

The Trump administration has published new visa rules aimed at restricting pregnant women travelling to the United States to give birth so their children can have US citizenship, a practice known as “birth tourism”.

Applicants will be denied tourist visas if they are determined by consular officers to be coming to the US primarily to give birth, according to the rules in the Federal Register. They will have to prove they are traveling to the US because they have a medical need and not just because they want to give birth here.

Children who are born in the US are automatically granted American citizenship, a right guaranteed by the 14th amendment of the constitution.

I bet Trump is thinking of Mexican women, but the only large group of pregnant women coming to the US is Russian. From the AP:

Every year, hundreds of pregnant Russian women travel to the United States to give birth so that their child can acquire all the privileges of American citizenship.

They pay anywhere from $20,000 to sometimes more than $50,000 to brokers who arrange their travel documents, accommodations and hospital stays, often in Florida.

While the cost is high, their children will be rewarded with opportunities and travel advantages not available to their Russian countrymen. The parents themselves may benefit someday as well.

And the decidedly un-Russian climate in South Florida and the posh treatment they receive in the maternity wards — unlike dismal clinics back home — can ease the financial sting and make the practice seem more like an extended vacation.

Or pay enough $$ to the right person.

I’m sure this is intended for Mexican women only.

But who knows how low they will go in this regime ...

I’m wondering when they will require all women applying for visas to take a pregnancy test.

Or, all make all women here on visas take a pregnancy test every 6 months in order to keep their visas....

itself willing to do clearly illegal acts and then let the courts force an end to the illegal practice, they're banking upon the courts being so slow to respond or find a court w/ a judge who will rule favorably on their behalf while 90% of all regular judges wouldn't. They have already done this on many other things.
