Why No GOP Senator Will Stand Up to Trump

I don't fully agree with the why exactly, but we are experiencing something again that has happened before, this time, it's much worse; much, much worse. The historical value of this article is useful, though.

So, that's what that awful SMELL is. Whew! What a malodorous stench emanates from the GOP now. It's nauseating to say the least and very corrosive, to boot.

At the end for Richard Nixon, after all the mounting evidence in the Watergate scandal, after both special prosecutors, after all the White House indictments, after the guilty pleas, after the obstruction efforts fell apart, after all the court fights, after all the damaging revelations in outlets like the Washington Post, Time and the Los Angeles Times, after all the impeachment hearings, it all came down to Barry Goldwater.

It’s easy, nearly 50 years after Watergate, to forget that Nixon’s ignominious departure from the White House was hardly a foregone conclusion. The Republican Party had stuck closely with Nixon even through the darkest days of the Watergate scandal; even as its lawmakers whispered behind closed doors about his guilt and even as public opinion polls showed Nixon dragging down their party, they had toughed it out—past the indictments of his top aides, past the courts batting back one attempt at obstruction after another, even after Nixon’s attacks on and ultimate firing of the special prosecutor targeting him.

It wasn’t until August 6, 1974, at the regular Senate Republican Conference lunch that Barry Goldwater fumed to his colleagues: “There are only so many lies you can take, and now there has been one too many. Nixon should get his ass out of the White House—today!”

<snip>

That loyalty from the base to Nixon had caused the GOP to stand strong in the face of Watergate, even as the news worsened, the indictments piled up, and the “smell” worsened. The most loyal even created the National Citizens’ Committee for Fairness to the Presidency (NCCFP), the day’s equivalent of a super PAC, to promote the president’s defense in ads.

It seems like there's always a "but" doesn't it?

Goldwater was for gays in the military, pro choice, and anti-fundie ...

Like you said... I'd take Barry over this asshole any day.

The "conservatives" know that he's not conservative, either.

I'll take, "They are complicit co-conspirators" for a thousand, Alex.

What are the GOP?

I think there is a sufficient amount of incentive from the GOP to grab something else for a change. This is unprecedented and even the Nixon debacle didn't have the implications of wresting power, like this time around. Trump is your answer. Once you see what he ultimately wants, (he has said it many times in many ways) then you know what the GOP is shooting for.

Perhaps they don't think they have much to lose this time because their days are numbered and they know the demographics and the problem they have with being obsolete dinosaurs in these technical times. Why not go for all the gusto you can when the opportunity arises? Sedition? Is that too strong a word for the GOP reaction to its waning relevance in years to come?

There is just too many RETHUGS involved. 10 to 30 probably are DEEPLY involved. The cost to the rethuglicon party would wipe them out. They think they are better off taking a chance on the 2020 election.

that GOP Senators who are appalled at Trump are going along in order to assure their own re-election, because they want to remain in a position to protect the country from Trump. (At least I think that is what he said)

Sure.

So far they have completely failed to protect anything from the Trump monster. He is not controllable.

are fully aware that Trump is a terrible person and a terrible, dangerous president - yet with that knowledge, and in the face of clear evidence of high crimes and misdemeanors and statutory crimes and all manner of corruption, they continue to protect him because their Senate seats are that important to them. These are almost all wealthy people (it's hard to get to the Senate without some money behind you); they could find jobs anywhere if they even needed them, but they are so hooked on being Senators that they are willing to sell the Senate, their country, and their own reputations down the river just so some yahoo from their state's backwaters won't primary them.

They want to be able to take cushy jobs in think tanks and as lobbyists. Gotta toe the line to still be eligible for that gravy train. My R Congressman has decided to retire, but he voted the party line all the way down the line since he announced that he is leaving Congress. I very briefly thought, well maybe he will do the right thing on his way out the door. NOPE! So it's more than just keeping their current jobs.

I am absolutely convinced that they have been threatened and that also since many of them have taken dirty money and are even co-conspirators that they won’t cross Traitor Trump. I’m addition, I believe there may be info that they can be blackmailed with (photos with hookers, minors etc)

Remember that the Russians hacked the RNC server at the same time that they hacked the DNC. They have released documents from the DNC, but kept all those RNC treasures in their back pockets. Hmmm. Wonder what they found?

The only downside seems to be that taking money from evil forces means you have to do evil's bidding and become evil yourself. And then you have to live with that. I wonder what the actual price is to betray everything decent and honorable? If we outbid evil, could we get our money's worth?

Isn't that a rather ancient story?

It is time for that kind of story to end once and for all.

We have a new plot to write and a Brave New World to imagine. These traditionalists are doing reruns for their own benefit and its time to cancel that show, press delete, and move on. The future will not wait. This is not the same world anymore, nor will it be.
