Because we wish for our children to be led by good example. It's a rather simple concept.
We do not want our children to be cruel or mean. We do not wish for them to mock other children and call them names. We want them to be good people.
Right?

And when our daughters were little, we taught them that respect is a two way street. We didn't demand respect from them, even when they were very young, without understanding that they could expect to have our respect coming back.
