Here we are going into impeachment proceedings and he puts together this clown car of a defense team with one already in potentially legal jeopardy alone. Sorry, for the poorly worded post, Im pissed off an in transit.

(37,365 posts)would not see defending trump as a good career move. Only the washed-up need apply.

(14,837 posts)They are trained that their job is to defend even the guilty.
But in this case, they are all tee-vee stars and see this as a way to get more lucrative bookings on cable shows. They are right of course. ALL the news channels will book them as legal experts after this trial is over.
It will be very lucrative for them. Sure, we can hate them, laugh at them, deride them, see them for their banality and egotism. But, they will have another rare scotch at the trump hotel bar and smile.

(9,894 posts)there's guilty and then there's Trump. My bet is no self-respecting, career-valuing top flight attorney would touch this fool with a ten foot pole. If you're successful, what would be the point?

(14,837 posts)While he has had trouble attracting personal attorneys because he is an impossible client, he does have a wh team of about 50 lawyers working at our expense to defend him in federal cases involving congress and states trying to gather evidence.
He also has barr, and an increasing number of doj attorneys working to protect him and attack his enemies.
And then there is his tee-vee team. They have other reasons for being there.

(34,087 posts)Taking on a particular client is not an indication of whether or not you like them, believe they are innocent, or agree with the goal they are seeking. As you suggest - everyone deserves a competent attorney. That is the foundation of our legal system - having each side represented by competent and zealous advocates is a system designed to test legal principles by fire, in order to produce the best legal outcome (not necessarily the most sympathetic one). So guilt purely by association is not generally a thing in the legal profession.
That said, attorneys have broad discretion as to who they take on as clients. I'm not in criminal work - but if I were, I would not represent the state. Yes - the state deserves competent counsel, but that competent counsel doesn't have to be me. As a general rule, the state has more money and other resources than defendants, so it feels to me as if my skills would be better utilized advocating for those accused of crimes who are less able to afford good counsel. Even so - I would not be ethically obligated to take on every criminal client who walked through my door, and I would certainly choose not to represent the criminal in the White House.

Seriously though, why do you need a good defense team when the fix is in?
