Notice that he often tends to go on about denials and then bring them into a repetitious set of reasons as to how it is an attack on him.

That can, in itself be a sign of lying. To simply answer no, or I don't know him is enough. He usually drags it out a bit to attempt to support his response. A person who is lying will tend to provide more information than is necessary when confronted. It can be an unconscious attempt to assure that the intentional lie is negated successfully.
