SENATE MAP BROADENS as Democrats see an unexpected opportunity in Kansas and strong fundraising in most target and reach states, leading to cautious optimism that flipping the Senate could be doablethough difficult. Secretary of State Mike Pompeos decision not to run in Kansas makes Kris Kobach, who lost the 2018 gubernatorial race, the putative Republican front-runner. Democrats are eager for a repeat of 2018, betting that Kobach doesnt appeal to voters beyond his hard-right base. Kobach says gubernatorial races are a different beast than federal ones.
Kansas Democratic state Sen. Barbara Bollier, a former Republican now blessed by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, is getting a boost from national Democratic fundraising appeals in the wake of Pompeos decision. Other Democrats in tough races had strong numbers to close 2019, including Cal Cunningham, a former Marine and businessman challenging Sen. Thom Tillis in North Carolina. Republicans, for their part, are excited by the financial performance of Michigans John James, who outraised incumbent Sen. Gary Peters in the last quarter.

(146,331 posts)in November. That is what we should all be focused on accomplishing, it seems to me. That is the key to the 2020 election. It would guarantee a Democrat in the White House and a majority in the Senate.
We can do it, but will we? It will take solid unity among Democrats, which is something that seems to be hard to come by.
