Karyn Turk, a former Mrs. Florida beauty pageant winner turned conservative commentator, was sentenced to a month in federal prison plus five months of house arrest Thursday after pleading guilty to social security fraud in September.
The charge stemmed from Turk pocketing her mothers social security checks rather than sending the money to the nursing home in which her mother was receiving care for dementia. Turks mother died June 10.
In separate cases in civil court, the nursing home, the mothers court-appointed guardian and the guardians lawyers are all suing Turk to collect money they say she owes them as the representative of her mothers estate. The total amount owed according to the three lawsuits is more than $320,000.

(43,295 posts)I'd bet house arrest will be difficult for the perp. The sentence is an irresistible temptation. Surely media will alert if any violations.

Elder care (disabled care as well) in this country for the most part is severely lacking, at times horrible and it's obscenely expensive. I had no idea how awful and expensive until I'd seen it for myself in several settings. Unfortunately, most of the solutions require proper regulations, more staff and funding. You would think with an aging population that's living longer, there would be a sense of urgency, but I haven't seen it. Instead, we've got trump cutting services and funding! I've discussed this topic with two geriatric doctors and assisted care staff, they feel the same. There is further trouble on the horizon, the increasing doctor shortage in the next 5 years. Very disheartening, and some days it's difficult to shake the sadness and hopelessness. Vote blue no matter who, is our only hope!!
