House delivers a message: Don't 'stumble into' another Middle East war

The U.S. House of Representatives, on a near party-line vote, approved a resolution Thursday that would make President Donald Trump go to Congress and seek authorization before launching any new military actions against Iran.

The resolution is non-binding. It goes to the Senate where at least two Republican opponents of military intervention, Sens. Mike Lee, R-Utah and Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, have declared support for it. Lee made headlines Wednesday after he described as worthless and condescending a Trump administration briefing on the U.S. drone strike that killed Iranian Gen. Qassim Suleimani.

"The American people do not want -- and Congress has not authorized -- another war in the Middle East," Rep. Derek Kilmer, D-Wash., said in a statement. Having recently visited U.S. troops, Kilmer said our soldiers need " a strategy that keeps then safe," and "enhances our national security."

Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, signed a letter to Trump on Wendesday. Signed by Kilmer as well, it said:

"For the past 17 years, Americans have shouldered the burden created by war in Iraq and subsequent conflict. We urge you to engage in a discussion with us (Congress) so that we can learn from the mistakes of the past and ensure our national security."
