Kevin M. Kruse RetweetedTrump's deranged rally stunt made a powerful case for reining in his warmaking authority. It wasn't just a string of insults. It was a clear statement that Trump views the opposition and any constraining role for Congress at all as illegitimate. New piece:

It's hard to overstate how deranged this is. And the deafening cheers from the rally crowd demonstrate once again how heavily Trump's petty, adolescent abusiveness figures as a factor in his appeal.

(12,165 posts)a lose cannon such as Trump is able to consolidate as much political power as he has done.
I'm tired of talking about how the next president will need to right the ship, as it were; now I'm starting to believe the very structure of the ship has rotted and is falling away.
I do believe the democratic party will prevail come November. There's too much pent-up anger about Trump that will vastly overpower his loyal base. That will be an important victory, for sure.
Should the democratic administration become as ruthless or more ruthless in pushing progressive ideas, structural reforms and social programs than republicans have across the country and in the federal government have done with authoritarian programs?
The house is burning and needs rebuilding.
Whoever the next Dem president is, they will have to be tough as nails and aggressive as hell to fix everything that dump has purposely fucked up. No more go along to get along. The future of our country is at stake.

CrispyQ
(36,509 posts)It's an unpopular opinion but I think our side does have some blame in where we're at today. The dems ran scared from the word liberal when Reagan started poking fun at it. Then we stupidly ignored hate radio and still do. We are now 40 years behind the 8-ball on messaging. We've conceded the narrative on every issue and I don't see any evidence that party leadership thinks this is a problem. We need a marketing department, stat!
I guess my point is, I don't see the party acting bold to fix some fundamental flaws in the system, even assuming they have the votes to pull it off. They will try to right the ship so it doesn't sink, and not ruffle too many feathers in the process, and that will be about it. Maybe the party will become more bold when the old guard dies out. I'm the same age as the old guard, so I won't see it, but I have hope in the younger generation of leaders.

Meanwhile, attacking an opponent's masculinity (or femininity) is the GOP's bread and butter. Trump has zero qualms going as low as possible, and then lower.
Why do they do it? IT WORKS.

KY_EnviroGuy
(14,494 posts)As reprehensible, immoral and repulsive as it may be, what tRump says is protected in America by our Constitution unless it's proven he incites violence and someone takes him to court for doing so. That said.....
What's just as offensive to me is a U.S. president using public tax funds to enable this behavior and to any reasonable person, it would surely be an impeachable offense. If he insists on behaving this way in a public setting and using the bully pulpit for fascist politics, he should pay for his travel and security and reimburse the Treasury for lost work time. That would put a stop to this bullshit.
There also is the issue of tRump violating his oath of office in that he should execute his Constitutional duties on behalf of all Americans, not a select few. In essence what's he's implying is that some 60 to 70 percent of Americans are not worthy of even having a president. On this basis, in a rational world he would be removed from office either by impeachment or execution of the 25th Amendment.
I would like to see provisions in future budgets that prevents politicians from using public funds for travel and security purposes for political campaigns. Just tighten the purse strings until it's impossible to do so, thereby returning our politicians to being true public servants.
I am indeed an idealist and a dreamer.
KY rant done for Friday........
