CHARLOTTE -- The chairman of the Democratic National Convention said today that President Obama wanted platform changes to include references to God and Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

"He wanted both God and Jerusalem back in the platform," Antonio Villaraigosa told a group of USA TODAY journalists.

Villaraigosa, the mayor of Los Angeles, added that he agreed with the additions, saying that "God and Jerusalem should be back in the platform."

Wielding the gavel during a Wednesday convention session, Villaraigosa said he called for three voice votes on the platform changes just to make it "absolutely clear" where the party stood.
