The amount of the settlement was not made public during a hearing at the federal courthouse in Covington, Kentucky.
Sandmanns lawsuit sought $800 million from CNN, the Washington Post and NBC Universal.

(25,478 posts)They could have settled for $1 for all we know. CNN probably figures that getting rid of him now is better than a protracted trial process, etc.
In addition, juries are notoriously unpredictable. Throw a few Trump supporters on the jury and a completely unwarranted jury award might become a possibility.

"A lawsuit is expected to be filed against Phillips, Wood said. He indicated that lawsuit would seek $5 million, but the judge said that Phillips does not have as much money as the other defendants."
Phillips is the brave Native American that waded into the cess pool of hate, trying to break up what was going on, and he's going to get sued for his trouble.
This country has absolutely lost its way. I grieve for that nation that has died in the drumpf years.

(3,145 posts)1. Nick Sandmann comes from a wealthy family and is represented by a big $$$ conservatives.
2. Despite the recent election of a Dem as governor, Kentucky is still largely Trump Country and distrust of so called "fake news" (aka non Trump approved media) is high. This is where the jury pool would be drawn from.
The last thing they want is for some local yokel jury to "send a message", similar to what happened to Oberlin College.
