North Dakota Senate Candidate Loudly Booed For Promise To Privatize Social Security

North Dakota Senate Candidate Loudly Booed For Promise To Privatize Social Security

By Scott Keyes

Rep. Rick Berg (R-ND) defended his plan to privatize Social Security at a Senate debate yesterday, prompting loud and sustained boos from audience members.

During the North Dakota Broadcasters debate in Bismarck, Berg’s opponent in the Senate race, Heidi Heitkamp, attacked the congressman for supporting privatizing Social Security. “When you say ‘I’m going to fix it,’ you’re going to privatize it,” charged Heitkamp. Indeed, as a state representative in 2005, Berg introduced a resolution formally supporting then-President Bush’s plan to privatize Social Security.

When Berg said that this attack is “what’s wrong with Washington,” he was met with a loud chorus of boos from the audience:

<...>

Approximately 18 percent of North Dakotans receive Social Security benefits. Their retirement incomes could be threatened if Berg and other conservatives succeed in privatizing Social Security.

Why do we never hear the commonsense proposal to raise the cap on SS contributions from OBAMA? If he favors it, then why doesn't he say so? And if he doesn't say so, I have no reason to believe he supports it.

as an Obamadea.

But who knows? So many questions I want to ask our president. It must be the most restricted job in history. They block every move he dreams up, they de-fund every project and they refuse to approve his staffing decisions.

At any rate, there is a move to "reform" SS--we must stick to the raise the cap plan becasue they will be pushing privatization and raising the retirement age.

The GOP won the open seat in 2010 handily.

It's now in play and a win for the Democratic candidate, Heidi Heitkamp could keep the Senate from switching hands this election.

It's a close race in a state that was red during the 2008 election.

Republican Congressman Rick Berg is leading former state Attorney General Heidi Heitkamp by nine points in Rasmussen Reports’ first look at the U.S. Senate race in North Dakota.

A new telephone survey of Likely North Dakota Voters shows Berg with 49% support to Heitkamp’s 40%. Two percent (2%) prefer some other candidate, and eight percent (8%) are undecided.
