In the McCain/Obama election, I knew it when McCain "suspended" his campaign in order to fly to Washington to discuss the financial crisis. I called my brother and said, "I have two words for you. President Obama."
This time I knew it when I saw Clint Eastwood on stage.

(5,444 posts)As far as I'm concerned, it's best to think the election is even (which the polls still say) and that the President needs to get all the contributions and work that we can give.

since then only one key has changed, and that's gone in favor of obama, achieving a military success in killing bin laden.
at this point, rmoney needs to pray for a couple of EPIC fails on the part of obama (scandal AND foreign policy debacle) in order to have a chance. i don't see that as likely at all.

(10,857 posts)When he was still a state senator, and as a legislative analyst I made sure to keep checking in on him regularly after that, because even back then he was unusually good at spelling out problems and offering solutions, which nobody else was doing very well back then.
In 2005, I remember telling a room full of my coworkers to keep an eye on that fellow, because he was something special. That was a fun day, with me the burned-out has-been white guy trying to convince a mailroom full of cynical black Washington, DC residents that a 3-forward had a decent shot at the White House. I hope they all remember that day, too.
What made Barack Obama so special back then was that when everyone was chasing the latest red herring Rove's gangsters dragged across the path, the young Senator was already talking about the results of the Bush Administration, and how to fix the damage they were doing.
In my own mind, President Obama's reelection has been almost a foregone conclusion since December, 2010. The first tax cut extension negotiations were when I realized that not only was this President excellent at what he did, he was a genius by comparison to other Presidents, even other Democratic Presidents, who seem to have a 40 IQ point edge over the other side.
Part of the way this President protects himself is by feigning vulnerability. This election might be in the bag in his own mind, but he is always careful to acknowledge the stakes and the difficulties ahead, allowing us the voters to shoulder some of the responsibility. He has also expanded his objectives toward flipping the House and holding on to the Senate in a grimly unbalanced year.
Now it is our responsibility. Remember to vote all-D, my friends!

because Palin's youth and inexperience took away McCain's strongest and most legitimate weapon against Obama -- OBAMA'S youth and inexperience!
In a similiar vein, I believe this election is over as long as rMoney refuses to show more income tax returns, because it's taken away HIS strongest and most legitimate weapon against Obama -- equal footing with independent voters. It's not equal anymore:
Of course, criticizing Obama for not having enough business experience while his running mate has even less doesn't help, either.

It was really kind of sad. He was using the moment to try to draw attention away from a big moment for Obama. (It was something like Obama's first speech since becoming the presumed nominee.)
A McCain supporter in the same room as I was so embarrassed he was shaking his bowed head from side to side. McCain was trying to be enthusiastic and charismatic, but he kept pulling back, resulting in a lot of nervous chuckling that seemed to indicate: Please don't make me do this. Please just elect me so I can stop trying to pretend to be something I'm not.
In 2012, it was last night, during Bill Clinton's speech.
Trying to be as brutally objective as I could, I realized: We have it, and they don't. It's that simple.

(28,581 posts)I am not quite as sure this time. There are alot of ignorant people out there with alot of lies being thrown at them. There is also alot of effort being put into making sure less Democratic voters can vote.
I am hopeful but not as confident.

(34,412 posts)I still remember being surprised when ABC called the election for President Obama 1 minute after the polls closed on the west coast. Looking back on it, I don't know why it shocked me, but it did. I didn't have cable or satellite at the time, only a local ABC outlet with fuzzy reception. I remember sitting there with tears streaming down my face, the relief was stronger than almost anything I ever felt. I could not believe we had finally seen the last of Bush. It chokes me up a little just thinking about it.

(9,748 posts)I figured that he, as a Democrat who was immensely popular with the rural base in Iowa and Illinois, had a big city base, and would be acceptable to a decent portion of the suburban base, was a shoe-in.
Having grown up on a farm, endured college, started my career in the suburbs and ended up in the city, I have long felt that a city/country coalition is more natural than the city/suburb coalition the DLC has crafted.

(37,748 posts)In the last cycle, I had a pretty good certainty that Obama would win after watching Couric's interview with Palin and then listening to her and her proxies' complaints about Couric's "gotcha" questions.
This time around, my certainty was cemented in place when I watched the GOP debates... gaffe after gaffe, mistake after mistake has me asking myself, "this is the best they have? Really??"

As for now, I'm not sure just yet. I think his chances are good. The reason is because the Rmoney Super PACs haven't even started. Rmoney is pulling ads in battlegrounds. Super PACs are going to take their place and carpet bomb those states.
I won't say he's got it won until probably mid to late Sept when I've seen what they throw at him and how he reacts.
