(17,931 posts)but what they've rarely had was an unencumbered, warm water port. It's more geography Putin is after than petroleum. And to degrade American influence in a region still vital to western industrial economies. Control of the west's economic lifeline in the Middle East has been a Russian wet dream since the 50's.

(111,104 posts)Opinion: Maybe this is the time to withdraw troops from Iraq?
Whatever goodwill we may have nurtured is surely usurped by now?
What better time to leave a country, that votes tomorrow for us to leave?
We should not stay where we are not welcome.
If the country is not self-sufficient by now, there is no more we can do.
Also, Trump has said he wants to draw down the troops in that part of the world.
Iraq would be a good place to start, in my opinion.

@janearraf
This is stunning - #Iraq prime minister tells parliament US troops should leave. Says
@realDonaldTrump called him to ask him to mediate with #Iran and then ordered drone strike on Soleimani. Says Soleimani carrying response to Saudi initiative to defuse tension when he was hit.

I hope the Iraqi government makes a formal decision to tell us to get out.

(17,931 posts)just fuck things up for everyone? Including the Saudis? I would suspect Bin Salman doesn't want an actual war in the Persian Gulf. Petty nitpicking with Iran over influence and control is one thing. No one with half a fucking brain would want a real shooting war there, particularly if they live in the neighborhood and their economic infrastructure is at risk. But then again, the Saudis have been playing a very dangerous game and are subject to blow back just like the rest of us.

(10,024 posts)Soliemani was the most effective leader fighting against ISIS, and who knows whether his successor will be as effective. The Iraqis have also now voted to eject US troops from their country, opening the door for ISIS to regroup. Trumps decision to betray our Kurd allies in Syria has also pushed the Kurds to fight for their own lives instead of continuing to fight ISIS.
Trump doesnt actually care about ISIS because they attack targets mostly in Europe, and Trump has done his best to turn our allies there into enemies. He certainly is a leader they no longer follow, and if Trump starts war with Iran the US will be alone with no allies. Unfortunately, Trumps rabid supporters will see war in the Middle East as the start of the end times and will be cheering him on so they can finally bring about the Rapture.
