Officials 'Stunned' Trump Took Most Extreme Option

Comments

“In the chaotic days leading to the death of Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani, Iran’s most powerful commander, top American military officials put the option of killing him — which they viewed as the most extreme response to recent Iranian-led violence in Iraq — on the menu they presented to President Trump,” the New York Times reports.

“They didn’t think he would take it. In the wars waged since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Pentagon officials have often offered improbable options to presidents to make other possibilities appear more palatable.”

“After initially rejecting the Suleimani option on Dec. 28 and authorizing airstrikes on an Iranian-backed Shia militia group instead, a few days later Mr. Trump watched, fuming, as television reports showed Iranian-backed attacks on the American Embassy in Baghdad… By late Thursday, the president had gone for the extreme option. Top Pentagon officials were stunned.”

replace them if they leave. The fundagelical endtimers will probably be trying to get some of their people appointed to those spots, and that would be the ultimate nightmare. Checkmate. We are really on the brink of ruin, here. I don't want to be too much of an alarmist, but I think we're in much worse shape today than we were on 9/11. At least we still had a Congress then.

so this jerkoff wanted to do the same thing. Plain and simple. It won't be long before this assclown is declaring that Suleimani was worse than Bin Laden, and that his action, therefore, was more courageous and simply greater than killing the man who masterminded 9/11. There is no end to this man's corruption, lies, greed, macho posturing, stupidity, shamelessness, denial and false bravado. All of it to his own ends. I was reading about the new U.S.S. Enterprise, due to be active in 2025 or 2027, if a 2 year delay is approved. In December 2016, just a few weeks before the Orange Sphincter infested the White House, Ray Mabus, the Democratic Secretary of the Navy, selected Katie Ledecky and Simone Biles to be her sponsors. What an inspired choice! But if the decision had come three weeks later, you can damn well be sure that the sponsors would have been Ivanka and Tiffany Trump...or probably just Ivanka, because Tiffany's father tends to forget her existence. Sigh. Nothing is too low for this "man."

people at the Pentagon who are hawks. They might be in favor of extreme action and escalation.

Kennedy was at odds with the Pentagon hawks over Cuba. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, they wanted him to invade and overthrow Castro, gambling that the Soviets would not retaliate in defense of Cuba.

Trump might have allies at the Pentagon when it comes to extreme measures.
