President Donald Trumps assassination of Iranian General Qassim Suleimani has young men in America worried about being drafted for a new war in the Middle East, The New York Times reported Saturday.
Federal law requires all men aged 18 to 25 to register with the Selective Service System, but there has not been a draft since 1973.
Historically, only men have been eligible for the draft. But the question of whether to register women has gained traction in recent years, as women have taken on broader roles within the military, The Times noted. In 2015, the Pentagon opened up all combat jobs to women. Last year, a federal judge in Houston ruled that excluding women from the draft was unconstitutional.
The newspaper said fears of a new war are spiking anxiety among many Americans.

There is reason for them to be concerned. Do you doubt Trump WOULD call for a draft if necessary to fight his ego-driven illegal war?

(32,064 posts)48 years... No one is going to call for a draft. Not Trump, not Democrats, not Republicans, not the military. It is not necessary for ANY scenario that could possibly happen. In order for a draft to be re-instated there would have to be a consensus by both parties. In today's political environment there would not be a consensus for Santa Claus or the Eastern Bunny.

(32,064 posts)A fantasy. It is not needed in any scenario. The military does not want it. Only people who have not been in the military think a draft is possible in today's reality.
