As a former Shia militia analyst who served multiple tours in Iraq and worked at the White House under both Presidents Bush and Obama, and later at the Pentagon, I participated in countless conversations on how to respond to Qassem Soleimanis violent campaigns across the region.

What always kept both Democratic and Republican presidents from targeting Soleimani himself was the simple question:
Was the strike worth the likely retaliation, and the potential to pull us into protracted conflict?
The two administrations I worked for both determined that the ultimate ends didnt justify the means. The Trump Administration has made a different calculation.
The Iranian government has vowed to retaliate and avenge Soleimanis death, and could do so in any number of ways:
Against our diplomats and service members or high-ranking military officers, against our allies and partners in the region, or through targeted attacks in the Western world.
It is critical that the Administration has thought out the moves and counter-moves this attack will precipitate, and is prepared to protect our diplomats, service members, and citizens serving overseas.

(23,099 posts)He has no idea or plans because PUtin told him he didn't need any, he'd make sure any retaliation by them made Impotus3 look good. Of course drumpf is stupid enough to believe him. The story on why this happened has already changed, but we know it was wagging the dog and doing PUtin's bidding. He never would have touched Iran without PUtin's approval because PUtin can take him out at any moment and he knows it.

(10,749 posts)It's short and to the point, and it's the most sensible thing you will read about the assassination of Soleimani. I think we can all agree he was a bad guy. But, still, the west managed to make a deal with Iran even with Soleimani at the helm of the Revolutionary Guards, the deal that trump used for toilet paper. There are lots of bad people in the world, and you have to deal with them one way or the other.
But now that trump has done what he has done, Rep Slotkin's succinct analysis comes into play. The options open to Iran for retaliation are damn near endless, and all with potentially devastating impacts. When I went to sleep last night, I dreaded waking up to reports of this retaliation. We all should.
