Why did House dems vote to pass a defense spending bill despite the NDAA amendment being killed?

Last edited Fri Jan 3, 2020, 01:55 PM - Edit history (1)

Anyone know the strategy there?

For the benefit of those who are not too politically inclined, I'll spell it out. Have also made the subject line less wonky.

The latest defense spending bill (the National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA) was passed by the house with an amendment hard fought for by Barbara Lee and others to repeal the AUMF (I refuse to fucking spell that out).

Why was the version od this bill which struck Lee's amendment passed by the House?

What is the reason?

Business writing. We were admonished never to use shortcuts like these without first explaining fully what they mean. A pet peeve!

Some people educate themselves. You have a library at your fingertips. Your choices about what subjects you actively seek out and which you do not are your choice.

the AUMF. The Senate took it out in July with a vote of 86-8.

7. Right, which means the Dems had to vote on the Senate version.

Which they did. I'm wondering why they voted for it despite the amendment being stripped

12. I hope Reps Lee and Khanna write a bill to get rid of that authorization.

Its very existence is shameful.

9. Because the NDAA is a 1119 page bill with a lot of other things in it

And the Democrats weren't going to hold it up. The conference committee went with the Senate on this issue. It's what happens.

13. I think holding it up for that reason would have been justified.

And that a majority of Americans would agree.

comments that address the question posed in the op and not criticism of the mechanics of the op. That's a distraction.
