State recovers $649G owed to Woburn bakery workers

http://bostonherald.com/business/general/view/20220905state_recovers_649g_owed_to_woburn_bakery_workers/

A temporary staffing firm and its client company will shell out more than $649,000 in restitution and fines to resolve allegations they failed to properly pay more than 1,200 workers at a Woburn bakery, Attorney General Martha Coakley said today.

Workers at the former Titterington’s Olde English Bake Shoppe Ltd. were jointly employed by the bakery’s new owner, CSM Bakery Products NA Inc., and a Foxboro-based staffing agency, EDA Staffing Inc.

The workers initially sought help from the Chelsea Collaborative and Greater Boston Legal Services, claiming they were not being paid for all hours worked and that they were subjected to unlawful wage deductions, Coakley said.

After learning of the workers’ concerns, CSM Bakery contacted Coakley’s office in December 2010 to report that workers did not receive all wages owed to them by Titterington’s. Coakley said her office determined that both CSM and EDA were jointly liable for the workers’ unpaid wages.

They are used to insulate the client from the consequences.

My first though on seeing the headline was "who the hell has a gigabillion dollars?"

I have never seen a number in the thousands written as $xxxG. I have heard it spoken, as in "I pull down a 100 g )or 100 g's) a year," but it is not written that way. The usual placeholder is "K", as in "State recovers $649K owed to Woburn bakery workers".
