Trump wants a distraction to take the public's mind off the impeachment.
Putin knows this and reportedly, Trump was on a call with Putin shortly before the drone strikes.
Trump is too dense to come up with a plan himself but Putin could have suggested this, telling Trump it will push impeachment into the background.

I'm sure Putin would be delighted for the US and Iran to be locked in a major war while he just sits back and watches them blow themselves to pieces.

Seems unlikely Putin would encourage the US to attack a Russian ally. If the post in another thread citing commentary that Iran and Iraq were becoming more friendly toward each other is correct, it makes even less sense.

What makes more sense to me is that Trump was ginned up by MBS (Saudi Arabia) or Netanyahu or both to do this. Both Saudi Arabia and Israel see Iran as an existential threat to them and those two leaders appear to be especially influential with Trump. The bonus of distracting from impeachment is probably something Trump could've easily thought up himself.

Will putin now use his hackers to cyber attack our infrastructure systems to then blame Iran to escalate a war? They attacked our election installing trump and now are trying t blame the Ukraine for it, so is this the same pattern from putin and trump? I think so. trump and putin can make billions from it from market manipulation, rerouting funding into their pockets from higher oil prices, and corruption. They can water down all impeachment news and new exposures against them with this. I think this was purposely done for trump by putin.
