A fanatic is one who, having lost his way, redoubles his efforts. Our involvement in Iraq has been a mess from the beginning. Begun on false premises, etc.
Now, with this latest problem at the embassy, I suspect Trump will use and escalate the conflict there to divert from his troubles. It's scary.
