that I thought it was a mistake on the part of the defense to get the old judge thrown out and that they may have made it harder to make their case.

The verdict will be handed down by a jury.
Read the OP. The judge didn't accept a SYG defense and the guy walked anyway.

Zimmerman and his attorney have no intention of using the SYG defense.
