As staggeringly unequal as 'separate but equal' was, it had the law at least paying lip service to the notion that blacks and whites are equal, which no MAGAt would ever be able to acknowledge.

If slavery was brought back however, poor whites could point to the institution as 'proof' that whites were superior. It's one of the main reasons why poor white Southerners fought so fiercely in the Civil War. For wealthy slave owners, slaves were merely property. To non-slave owners, slaves were tangible 'evidence' of the abstraction (which is much more powerful that something concrete) that black people were inferior to white people. People will fight to the death over abstractions.
