What a great Christmas gift they gave to the Democrats. Frankly, I am surprised there are not TV ads already up and running showing these two assholes saying on the news they will rig the impeachment trial.
They appeared on the news proudly telling the American people we will violate our oath and rig the trial. We will work with Trump to make sure he is acquitted. The political TV ads will be devastating.
No matter what the Republicans do now in the trial the Democrats can say and show the Republicans rigged the trial. The Democrats should run Political ads 24hrs a day showing the video of Moscow Mitch and Graham betraying their oath and the constitution. They can't take it back, they can't say we were kidding. If they acquit Trump, the Democrats can run political ads showing Mitch and Graham on video saying they will rig the trial.
I don't know what the Democrats are waiting for, They should be producing those ads right now.
If the Democrats can't take advantage of this giant blunder and use it to show the American people how corrupt the Republicans have become, I will be shocked and depressed. This is the kind of mistake that ends careers.
I would like to see a political TV ad showing the video of Trump asking Russia, Ukraine and China to help him rig the election and then showing the video of Moscow Mitch and gutless Graham saying they will rig the Impeachment trial, an impeachment trial about Trump asking other countries to help him rig the election.

Why we don't use our millions of contribution dollars telling the truth to counter the republican lies is something I've never understood.

(2,227 posts)Democrats keep getting handed these killer opportunities, but they don't take them. Letting things sit and stew don't always work out so well for us. Mueller, the report, and Barr's rebuttal which sat out there so long it became the assumed truth, are good examples. Meanwhile, we sat on our hands, while Mueller wrote a "strongly worded" letter, and then refused to testify, until it was too late.
Which is why I am all for passing on the baton to a younger generation. The same old same old is WHY we are at this point.

(4,066 posts)Perhaps, those ads would have some effect on the the "swing" and independent voters. I don't know. I would hope so.
The Trump cult does not care though. They are completely in favor of doing ANY and EVERYthing possible to keep Trump. They don't give a damn if it's legal, moral, or ethical. They just want to keep their savior of hate in office so they can continue to openly hate and attack minorities, women, LGBTQ+ and immigrants.
Why the hell they think a rich (not billionaire) asshole who lives on 5th Ave in NYC gives a damn about their ignorant, red-neck asses and will actually share anything with them is beyond me.

When confronted by the truth of the Vietnam War, conservatives chose denial and a John Wayne explanation of what went wrong...Those damn egghead intellectuals lost a perfectly good war.
Ever since, the boomer generation has been fighting the same culture war. Any chance to get revenge reflects a long history of grievance.

(81,322 posts)That sums it up. Theyve nursed their grievances for decades to the point where its come to define them.

(79 posts)I agree with you that the ads would have no impact on the Trump cult. I don't think that focusing on state politicians is a winning strategy for beating Trump in the presidential race. The former Republican governor of Kentucky did just the opposite and lost: He focused on Trump and national issues instead of state issues, expecting that the Trump base would re-elect him. Instead, his Democratic opponent ran on issues directly affecting the state, and he won.
I hope Kentucky voters will unseat McConnell and South Carolina voters will defeat Graham. That is a longshot hope, however. I live in Kentucky and will vote for a Democrat to beat McConnell, but while Mitch obstructs things on the national stage, he brags about his success in bringing money to Kentucky when he's in Kentucky, pumping misinformation to Kentucky voters. If Democrats want to unseat Mitch, it won't be by focusing on what he does for Trump, it will have to be by somehow convincing voters that he isn't as good for Kentucky as he boasts he is.
And a focus on McConnell, in my opinion, won't help defeat Trump in a national election.

Many here wailed, pulled their hair and rolled around for months about how Pelosi was weak, timid and most certainly not Speaker material. Doomed, I tell you, we're all dooooomed! Then.....all of a sudden.....she was brilliant!!!!! The best speaker EVER!!!! But since IQ45 and his minions didn't automatically...dissappear!....we're back to wailing, hair pulling and rolling around on the ground...Dems weak! What are they waiting for!? (115,735 posts)as they've been doing: They and the other Senate GOPers know Trump is nuts; they are no doubt painfully aware of how nuts he is, but they're too afraid of him and his base to speak up or challenge him. Everything they are doing and saying right now is for an audience of one - Trump - and not for Democrats, Nancy Pelosi or anybody else. They are doing whatever they think they have to do to placate him and make him think they've got it under control.
And I think the reason for this is that they are very afraid that if the Senate GOPers, McConnell especially, can't make this impeachment thing go away quickly and result in what Trump can call total exoneration, Trump, who is already starting to wig out, will go full Chernobyl. He will do something so spectacularly insane and awful that they won't be able to explain or justify it to anybody but the most brainwashed 25%, the hard-core cult members. Maybe they even suspect or know what that might be. The result, if it happens, will be that they and the GOP will own whatever disaster Trump initiates and the party will be so radioactive that no political life can survive anywhere near it.
They're riding the tiger and they don't dare fall off.

(4,379 posts)They are hoping if they protect Trump everything will turn out OK. They will keep their seats and they can keep Trump under control and they will live happily ever after. They have no balls and they are fools.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,735 posts)I suspect that they are afraid not only of alienating the loony-tune base if they fail to stop the trial, but of causing Trump to go so completely mad that he does something that will utterly destroy the party - or worse.

Trouble is, do enough Americans recognize patriotism when they see it? Or do they think it wears a red hat because the red hat tells them so?

(9,670 posts)I think our reps are more concerned with removing any patent "partisan" cast to this impeachment inquiry and try it solely on its merits. Attacking McConnell et al. means the GOP propaganda team can go full-bore "Dems being Dems" and perhaps neutralize some of our good faith in the process. Just like a prosecutor wouldn't malign the defendant or his counsel personally prior to trial, it could be argued that avoiding acts that could be deemed overtly political at this juncture suits the Dems' cause more than calling the GOP out for its sabotage of the process. Thinking Americans already perceive them through that lens anyway.

(36,829 posts)Moscow Mitch et al are whining that Pelosi is not immediately sending the articles of impeachment to the Senate.
I don't remember where in these forums I saw it but a post was made that the articles for Clinton's impeachment were sent to the Senate prior to Christmas but the republican Senate did not do anything until everyone returned after Christmas break.
