He waged his own personal War on Christmas

Were going to start saying Merry Christmas again! said President-elect Donald Trump this past Saturday, going on to decry the War on Christmas. However, in the 1980s Trump was waging a war on Christmas of his own.
In 1981, Trump bought the apartment building at 100 Central Park South. He then spent a decade trying to push rent-controlled residents out, so he could tear it down and build luxury condos. Part of this effort involved banning all Christmas decorations from the lobby.
But tenants fought back.
The lobby was free from decorations in 1981 and 1982, but in 1983 the tenants asked if they could have a Christmas tree in the lobby. According to New York magazine, their spokesperson pleaded that some residents are very old and have nowhere to go for the holidays this will be their only chance to share in the holiday sprit. Citadel, the company managing the building for Trump, agreed, on one conditionthe tree would be taken down should any tenant complain it infringe[s] upon his or her religious beliefs.
<snip>
Of course, Trumps campaign against the tenants didnt end with decorations. He filed, for instance, a baseless eviction proceeding against a tenant the day after Christmas that year, for allegedly failing to pay rent. That tenant, whose heating didnt work for 3 consecutive winters, spent 2 years and $10,000 in legal fees as a result.

This is the character of a man the Republicans are willing to risk their political futures on. Good luck with that, repugs...

(67,782 posts)...but NYC courts come down strong against landlords and in favor of renters.
In 1980 I moved into a fully renovated 16-story historic building on the West Side. The renovators neglected to install my kitchen doors (it was a tiny studio, so the kitchen loomed out onto the main room) I left the manager several notes and got notes back "we'll do it in two weeks", "we'll do it next week", etc. This went on for almost a year. Finally, I told the manager in a note that I wasn't going to pay rent until the "improvements" were complete, which was the wording of my lease.
Three months later I got an eviction notice, with a notice to appear in court. I went to court without a lawyer, but all my notes back and forth over the previous year. The judge looked at them, turned to the manager and told him "get those doors installed within a week", then he turned to me and said, "if they're not installed by a week from today, you call my office!"
The doors were installed the next day.

While the old poem speaks of the wheel of the gods turning slowly, it does turn.
When the proverbial chickens come home to roost, Trump may not like it so much. He's riding high now, but I'm not thinking it will last all that much longer.
And then....well, he'll come to understand what a 'kick 'em while they are down' kind of society he helped create. It won't be pretty - when the guy slithers out of office, the lawsuits and criminal charges will just keep coming. He'll end up living out the rest of his life in a cage.

There is no reason to trust such a person in the present. Trump abused people when he could have made other choices, that tells me everything that I need to know about his character.
