or this country's going to die of too many lies. -Bill MoyersA few days ago, I came across these words attributed to Bill Moyers in a Common Dreams email. It sounds like his take on things but I haven't double checked the source, do not have a link and offer them only for comment:
"We've got to get alternative content out there to people, or this country's going to die of too many lies.
"It means that virtually everything the average person sees or hears, outside of her own personal communications, is determined by the interests of private, unaccountable executives and investors whose primary goal is increasing profits and raising the share prices. More insidiously, this small group of elites determines what ordinary people do not see or hear. In-depth coverage of anything, let alone the problems real people face day-to-day, is as scarce as sex, violence, and voyeurism are pervasive."
"So if we need to know what is happening, and Big Media wont tell us; if we need to know why it matters, and Big Media wont tell us; if we need to know what to do about it, and Big Media wont tell us, its clear what we have to do. We have to tell the story ourselves."

If we are lucky, historians will figure it all out some day.

The OP is only a small part of an address given by Mr. Moyers 13 years ago.
If not, his speech should be, but probably already has been, an OP itself.

Yesterday I wrote a post here lamenting the state of US news media and the need for programming like 'Moyers & Co.'
