Monroe firefighter accused of torching his recovered SUV

MONROE — Rather than exhibiting exuberance when police recovered his stolen sports utility vehicle in Bridgeport, police said a Stepney volunteer firefighter set it on fire and then reported that it had been stolen again.

Police said Matthew Bittner, 38, of 11 Pilgrim Lane, and his buddy, Joseph Bogdanyi, 32, of 115 Squantuck Road in Seymour, torched the SUV because Bittner couldn’t live with the idea the vehicle may have been driven by minorities in Bridgeport.

Bittner, a volunteer fireman, was charged with first-degree arson, conspiracy to commit first-degree arson, tampering with evidence, making a false statement and insurance fraud.

Police said when they later went through Bittner’s phone, they found numerous text messages between him, Bogdanyi and his girlfriend making disparaging, racial comments about Bridgeport residents.

In one of the texts, Bittner suggested that someone should put a wall around Bridgeport “to keep the animals from getting out.”

Even in California, Oregon, Washington.

Not so much in the south. The south haters are always triangles silent with these episodes.

OR and WA have significant (and well publicized) racist elements. Possibly accelerating with the newly energized white nationalism. And CA's entire history is saturated with virulent racism. All well known.

But the south has it's own charming little history (together with current practice and outrage) .. and you're not going to be getting a pass there.

But most of us live in complete peace and harmony with our neighbors, coworkers, friends, etc.

The south is much more integrated than the north and Midwest. I’d bet some of our loudest voices here on DU barely even know anyone of a different race.

23. I am glad that you pointed out integration.

My area has very few private schools, the ones that are, are truly religious ones. There are no charter schools. Most kids, rich, poor, Black, White, American Indian, Indian, Chinese, Hispanic, go to one of the five area high schools, one of the middle schools or one of the elementary schools. Local pools are completely integrated and families of all races can be seen at them on a hot Saturday or Sunday.

Housing here is integrated more by wealth than race, middleclass people of all races live next to eachother, as do wealthy ones, without regard to race. I honestly don't see that in the Northeast or Midwest, tracts are segregated more by race.

40 years ago it was a s**tkicker town with a Neo-Nazi problem. There are white flight.
It will not be popular around here to say, but the lack of a twang does not remove bigotry.

Lower Fairfield County are a far better class of people.
