When Donald Trump ran for president in 2016, U.S. Sen. Susan Collins of Maine refused to vote for him.
Denouncing him for mocking the vulnerable and attacking ethnic and religious minorities, she wrote in House Speaker Paul Ryan instead, a choice that didnt even register in the final results since the Wisconsin Republicans hadnt registered as any sort of candidate in Maine.
But it appears that Trump, unusually for him, isnt holding a grudge.
U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham recently issued a tweet recently hailing Collins, a four-term Republican, for showing unbelievable courage during the bitter confirmation fight surrounding U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh last year and at other times when our country has needed a steady voice.
We need her to ensure a GOP majority in 2020, Graham wrote, and urged his supporters to send money to Collins campaign. He also linked to her recent reelection announcement.

Quid pro quo for her vote in the Senate trial...

One of the best things to happen to Maine in a while if they run her out of the Senate.

(82,849 posts)Sen. Collins is trying to retrieve some credibility by casting safe "no" votes against certain judicial nominees when her vote isn't needed for confirmation. It's a feint, a ruse. Collins is a dyed-in-the-wool Trumpist Republican. When the United States' interests are in conflict with her party's interests and her vote is needed, Collins will always side with the party.

(1,499 posts)She's trying to distance herself from her allegiance to appear "independent" and 'maverick".
It's the message in her outside-funded campaign commercials, one of which shows her standing next to Sen. Klobuchar.
But Mainers saw her Kavanaugh travesty and her mock 'concern' about this and that transgression against humanity in the current cycle.
She still won't speak against her corporate overlords except in whispers to scam voters.
And she's wealthy with Russian petrochemical dollars thanks to her second husband, so Russia is AOK with old Sellout Susie.
