Trump impeachment: White House withheld Ukraine aid just after Zelensky call
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-50886437#
22 December 2019
The White House sought to freeze aid to Ukraine just 91 minutes after President Trump spoke to President Volodymyr Zelensky by phone in July, a newly-released government email has revealed.
The email, telling the Pentagon to "hold off", was sent by a senior White House official.
In the phone call, Mr Trump asked the Ukrainian leader to investigate his political rival, Democrat Joe Biden.
Mr Trump has been impeached for abuse of power over the issue.
Democrats say the phone call shows Mr Trump used the office for personal political gain.
A US whistleblower who heard about the conversation raised concerns, which ultimately triggered the impeachment inquiry.............................

Bad sourcing from a random twitter account.

Plug that in a search engine for hundreds of sources.

(11,029 posts)Nowhere does the "transcript" say "INVESTIGATE JOE BIDEN." It's implied, but not directly stated (although it certainly might be in the actual transcript rather than what was released). Joe and Hunter's first names do not appear in the "transcript."
It's sloppy quoting from the BBC, and the tweeter emphasized that particular misquote. The tweeter also put a #MAGA tag on it which is kinda strange, but w/e.

(11,029 posts)My issue is the direct line "Investigate Joe Biden". The article says that is in the transcript, and the tweeter makes it sound like a new revelation, but that isn't what is in the "transcript".

(17,444 posts)It seems reasonable to me for it to be paraphrased as "investigate." They didn't offer it as a direct quote. Zelensky took it that way, as he refers repeatedly to investigation in the document.
Investigate is indeed a mighty big word for 45*(Impeached).

(11,029 posts)This is a news organization. It shouldn't be misquoting. especially with a link to the actual "transcript."

(129,096 posts)where it is well known what the function of the U.S. Attorney General is, doesn't mean "investigate" ?
There is no "misquoting". There is summarizing - especially when attempting to discuss someone who daily, butchers the English language. And as a note, what was in quotes was the "do us a favour (sic)" (using the British spelling). The rest was not in quotes.

(11,029 posts)The tweet did make it seem like Joe being directly named was a revelation, especially since that wasn't the subject of the article. I immediately pinged on the "Investigate Joe Biden" and I knew that was never directly said. Thinking this was some new smoking gun, I clicked on the link which dealt more with the e-mail regarding aid, and saw the line, which I knew wasn't in the transcript.

(129,096 posts)and the use of the " vs the ', where the single quote ( ' ) is what SHOULD have been used to indicate a quote embedded within the pair of double quotes ( " ). I.e., it should have been written (with the person's tweet quoting the article narrative to include the article's further embedded literal quote) -
I agree that the replaying of what the transcript said months later, is redundant, but this was referencing overseas reporting. I think the bigger bombshell is the email that was recently reported regarding OPM (Duffy) telling DOD to hold the money some "91 minutes" (or so the time reported) after the July 25th phone call.

(11,029 posts)I'm just a stickler for clarity and accuracy (10 years in the newspaper biz) and leery of rando twitter accounts posting new revelations. That's how b/s gets spread.
