The Republican senator didnt vote against a single one of the presidents judicial nominees in 2017 and 2018. That changed in 2019.Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) didnt cast a single vote against one of President Donald Trumps judicial nominees in 2017 and 2018. But she suddenly got cold feet on some of his picks this year as she kicked off whats shaping up to be one of her toughest reelection cycles yet.
Collins, the most senior Republican woman in the Senate, cast the deciding votes confirming several of Trumps controversial nominees in recent years, including those deemed unqualified by the American Bar Association (ABA).
And though she says shes pro-choice, the four-term incumbent has voted to confirm dozens of judges who have signaled they oppose abortion.
But Collins steadfast approval for the presidents court picks weakened in 2019 after Republicans picked up two more seats in the Senate during the previous years midterm elections.
She was able to oppose some of the nominees ― grabbing headlines and the goodwill of some of Maines Democratic-leaning voters along the way ― likely knowing full well that they would receive the confirmation votes needed from her Republican colleagues anyway.

(82,849 posts)Collins' M.O. is to talk a good game of independence, then vote with the Republican majority every time. She's probably in close contact with McConnell to make sure that her vote isn't needed on this or that unqualified nominee so she can carry those votes back to Maine and show the people how independent she is as long as she has McConnell's permission. Did any of those nominees not get confirmed? Is McConnell bad-mouthing Collins for her votes? No and no.
Maine: Don't get fooled again.

(6,806 posts)Sure hope voters in Maine don't fall for this.
But what she will do is add it to like a box score to make it look like she's all evened up.

(54,403 posts)If Moscow Mitch wants to know what the last dying remnants of rationality in his Party are thinking, and to what extent they'll act on it, he floats Collins and her "concern" to see what the fuss is about. He then either suppresses it or ignores it, depending on whether or not he deems any action to be necessary.
Collins knows that once she leaves the Senate, she will be nothing more than a footnote. No one will want her opinion, no one will want to know about her time in the Senate. Her best hope is a teaching fellow at the University of Maine.
So, sure she wants to keep her seat. With any luck, the voters of Maine will have other preferences, and to the extent that Republican electoral fraud can't buy her another "surprise Republican upset victory" like we are so used to seeing.

(54,403 posts)Well, I had met Angus King 20 years before that, but had never met Collins or LePage, who were there, too. Collins was dull and boring, where LePage was an obnoxious boor.

(56,828 posts)to vote against some judicial nominees since the Senate is 53-47 now and was 51-49 before. Losing 1 vote isn't as big a deal anymore.

More than any Republican except Trump, I want to see her lose.
