I Just Noticed Something On MSNBC Re: Impeachment In The Senate....

It said: Supermajority of 67 votes needed if all 100 Senators are present.

What if let's say 29 Repug Senators don't show up for the trial? Does that reduce the supermajority of votes needed to impeach to around 47?

Am I interpreting that the right way?

was the magic number.

It has got me thinking - why would MSNBC state it the way they did today?

Why would they say 'if all 100 Senators are present'?

Is there anything going on behind the scenes that would lead MSNBC to say it in such a way?

I think that's some kind of magical thinking or something. They'll be there - every last Republican will be there. It's foolish to think they will stay away from this.

Maybe we can keep this real, you know...

According to Harvard constitutional law professor Laurence Tribe, this is how the the GOP can theoretically convict trump without having to actually vote him out.

Not very likely, but flooding GOP Senators with the idea that not showing up could save their seat.

If enough stayed away, we could get a majority even if not enough to convict.

If they're afraid of going on the record as voting for removal, not showing up is basically the same thing.
