(94,792 posts)James P. McGovern (D-MA) was elected to the House of Representatives in 1996. He was appointed to the House Rules Committee in 2001, named ranking member in 2018, and became Chairman in 2019.
During his time in Congress, Congressman McGoverns top priority has always been his constituents back home. He has been an advocate for making college more affordable, and authored a bill to increase Pell Grant funding. To protect our environment for future generations to enjoy and to enhance recreational community spaces in urban and suburban neighborhoods, Jim successfully fought to defend the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which provides grants to preserve open space.
Congressman McGovern authored legislation to give tax credits to employers who pay the salaries of National Guard members and Reservists called to active duty. And when the Supreme Court handed down its flawed Citizens United decision to allow unlimited amounts of money in politics, Jim introduced several Constitutional Amendments to overturn the courts decision.
Congressman McGovern is also co-chair of the bipartisan Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, which investigates international human rights abuses and recommends how the U.S. should foster respect for democratic values abroad. In this role, he has held a spotlight to egregious international human rights violations that would have otherwise gone largely unnoticed.
In 2012, Congressman McGovern authored the Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act, which allows the President to punish foreign officials who the U.S. identifies as corrupt or as human rights abusers. The bill was passed by the Senate later that year and signed into law by President Obama.
As a leading advocate in Congress for peace, Congressman McGovern has repeatedly called attention to the lack of Congressional oversight and approval of Americas wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. Throughout his career, Jim has been a voice for reallocating defense spending towards domestic priorities like education, infrastructure, and supporting our veterans and seniors.
One of Congressman McGoverns greatest passions is ending hunger at home and abroad. He is the founder and co-chair of the House Hunger Caucus and sits on the House Subcommittee on Nutrition, where he advocates tirelessly for funding programs that help working families, children, and the elderly put food on the table when times are tough.
He also authored the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program to provide school-based meals for millions of children in some of the worlds poorest countries.
Congressman McGovern attended The American University in Washington, D.C. where he earned both his bachelors degree in History (81) and his Masters Degree in Public Administration (84). He worked his way through college as an intern in the office of Senator George McGovern. He worked for Massachusetts Congressman John Joseph Moakley (D-South Boston) from 1982 until 1996, serving as a staff assistant, press secretary, and legislative director.
It was while working in Moakleys office that Congressman McGovern met his wife, Lisa Murray McGovern, who was an aide to Congressman Gerry Studds (D-MA). The McGoverns married in 1989 and have two children, Patrick and Molly.

(4,986 posts)Before the hearing started, said that any members of the House can come before the committee, that filibusters are possible, and is expected to be a full day.
Currently, MSNBC is airing the hearing live.

(4,986 posts)Even complimented the ranking member for dedication.
The rank member, cole, went on and on about the unfairness and illegitimacy of the process as though it might turn his party into the majority.
Raskin spoke forcefully and is worth watching his opening comments.

(4,986 posts)Hey, collins, this is coming from one hillbilly to another: git to makin' movies. There will be lots of camera time, and you might just deliver us from this nightmare you're spinning-out in Congress.

(4,986 posts)pearls of wut? from collins, and he basically continues with,
Oh, the tyranny of the clock and a calendar, he goes on... Don't need to be a constitutional expert to understand that.
Up and down, Alice in wonderland ding dang darn, flail hands.
Says he'll make four points, but only brought up two. Brought up Yermak's recent connected to the media, and something else... (Don't think there were two more)
Concludes with clock and calendar bs.

(4,986 posts)Due to a family medical emergency - per McGoverns opening remarks. Jamie Raskin, who is on both the Judiciary and Rules committees, and a constitutional law professor will appear in his stead.

(50,318 posts)on this now, order the committees to resubpoena everyone and everything they want, then ask the courts for expedited hearings. This is utter bullshit and it will continue to be utter bullshit unless the main players are forced to testify under oath and explain to the fools on the right exactly what happened. If this lasts through the election cycle that's just fine because it's only going to get worse for Republicans. Wipe the fucking smiles off their cult faces.

(4,986 posts)While I fashion protest signs and write up Christmas cards to send to my republicon Congressmen, who otherwise dont give a flip about my zip code. Will have a tis the season for impeachment and peace on Earth type of vibe. Will do my best to mind my language, but I might just have to randomly snark back in the margins to whatever collins, etc. is saying at that moment.

The histrionics are an act to divert from an ironclad case for guilt.
I've heard people who know him say Collins in the hearings doesn't look, sound, or talk like the person they know. From the little I've been able to stomach listening to, I believe he's doing a good, therefore incredibly scummy job of projecting outrage and giving our neighbors the verbal "balls" their job is to run down the field wherever they are.

(4,986 posts)McGahn is still ongoing and not proceeding fast enough to satisfy the inquiry?
___
Does this mean collins came down to reality for a moment and admitted that delays/blocked testimony are stymying the impeachment inquiry? Seems this fits within his clocks and calendars rubric. So, do tell, collins, who is the tyrant with all the clocks and calendars and Mulvaneys, etc?

(4,986 posts)Is CT put out by Russia as Dr. Fiona Hill testified. He went on to say it was outrageous that tRump tied that Russian conspiracy propaganda to his efforts to leverage Zelensky.
And then further related how this creates risks to national security and pointed to multiple dictators around the world that could take advantage of a pResident willing to use such propaganda and take such actions.
Mersky

And has further related the importance of the rule of law as she brings in her Central American heritage. And sites the corruption leading to the narco state of things in Honduras.
(In her remarks, I missed her relating the troubling nature of republican primaries being cancelled multiple states. Raskin brought this up just a minute a ago ~ 4:00 ET)

(10,039 posts)Trump never said "quid pro quo" during his perfect call so he wasn't asking for one? Yet, he never said "corruption" either but he actually was talking about corruption? Also, I'm starting to hear a lot of whining about how Democrats are calling Zelensky a liar and being such meanies to him. Then these whiners turn around and denigrate our historical allies and American citizens like Janet Yovanovitch and Adam Schiff.

(4,986 posts)collins. Pretending that the House hasn't done anything but the impeachment.
collins swerved away from that and over to 1000 points of dim light on why the Intelligence Committee was involved in the inquiry hearings. And absolutely has to cast aspersions about Schiff with some house rule 660.
Imagine his cracking, whining voice to conclude his reply.

(4,986 posts)It's all fairly extraneous stuff, and then...
burgess goes out on a limb saying that the meta data call records are a risk to natl security.

(4,986 posts)Of the call. I think he's getting at whether collins believes that it's an inadvertent error (quotes back collins' previous language) or an intentional omission.
